Wrong numbering?

edit

The numbering of parliaments was queried in Talk:Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom#Contradiction. It seems to me the first was in 1801 and the second in 1802. References there^ --Cavrdg 18:35, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you're right. I checked this today in the Parliamentary debates of the House of Commons. The First Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland met in 1801, comprising of all those elected to the Parliament of Great Britain in 1796 and 100 of the 300 MPs elected to the Parliament of Ireland in 1797. --WóCoill 11:51, 15 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Footnote on PM

edit

The footnote on Prime Minister is misleading, as it seems to imply that those listed before Henry Campbell-Bannerman were all First Lords of the Treasury, whereas the link shows that there were a number od FLotTs who were not considered PM. William Quill 12:59, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Campbell-Bannerman was the first person to be officialy recognised as Prime Minister. Earlier Prime Ministers in the accepted list (starting with Walpole in 1721) were normaly but not always First Lords of the Treasury.

It seems to me this page and United Kingdom general elections are alike apart from the Parliament of 1801 which was not an election. Is this the only difference? Perhaps a merge should be considered since United Kingdom general elections contains a table with more wikilinks and information on the election majorities.

Who uses the numbering

edit

This discussion about the numbering seems to indicate that we the editors have just started at the beginning and counted up. Doesn't that make it original research. Surely we need to refer to some objective source for the numbering system ? -- Beardo 22:33, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is the official numbering, although a little obscure. See[1], for example. Morwen - Talk 12:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

edit

I propose that List of United Kingdom general elections should be merged into List of Parliaments of the United Kingdom. I agree with the poster of 'This page and United Kingdom general elections' that the two cover largely the same ground. I feel that the merged article should be here for consistency with List of Parliaments of England, List of Parliaments of Great Britain and List of Parliaments of Ireland. Overlap between reigns

edit

Could someone who is better at tables than I am please edit this to reflect the fact that Parliaments did not begin and end with the reign of that monarch (for example the current Parliament began under Elizabeth II, and the 40th Parliament began under her father, etc. etc.)

Thank you. OGBC1992 (talk) 08:20, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
