Issues to consider:

  • What info to include and in what format; eg. should we include constituencies?
  • What should the name of the article be? List of British MPs is just the simplest form I could think of.

We already have a complete list of members of the 2001 and 1997 parliaments. I will find the links to the pages. Secretlondon 11:52, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)

Morwen has added links to the complete pages - what do you see as the purpose of this list? Completeness or just notable figures? Secretlondon 11:54, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)

I'm suggesting an ambitious list of all British MPs, past and present. Also, this should be a master list for all MPs. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have repetition of this information in different formats. What do you say? -- Sam 11:56, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I think finishing the list of current MPs by country/party, and then working on lists for the 79, 83, 87 pariaments, is a higher priority for me. Morwen 12:00, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)
I think that if you wish to create a list with thousands of names on - rather than do it piecemeal you should do the lists by election - and then merge the data at the end. Secretlondon 12:01, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)
That's fine, of course! That work will inevitably feed in to this list, as you say; step by step, eh?! But there's no harm in setting up the structure of the page etc. I see you're including constituencies in the other lists: do you think that would be useful here? --Sam
I'm concerned it will be clutted. Some MPs have represented multiple seats, and some have crossed the floor. Morwen 12:11, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)
I had the same thought, but I don't know the general extent of such changes. I suggest, then, that the following format is stuck to:
  • Name (year entered Parl. - year left)
Is it worth including the MP/PM distinction, do you think? That might also clutter the list. --Sam

It would probably help if I say why this article occurred to me. I have a distant relative who was an MP, Sir Frederic Kelley, and I was looking for information on him as part of my family history research. However, I couldn't find any list of historic MPs or any master list of all British MPs, so I thought it would be a good idea to start one! --Sam

(In fact, I can't find such a list anywhere online.)
You do realise that if you complete this list it will probably have tens of thousands of names on? Secretlondon 12:19, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)
No! Is that a reason not to do it? It's not as ambitious as list of people!--Sam
Also, the only sensible way to create an exhaustive list is to first create lists of all the members for each session, then integrate them. Adding piecemeal may be fun, but won't produce a full systematic list. ;) Morwen 12:22, Jan 13, 2004 (UTC)
Pth! Well, I'll begin adding names from your lists then! Ner-ner! :D (Ooo, it is fun, isn't it?) --Sam
Seriously, I don't think there's a reason not to start now -- I can systematically add the names from the election lists you have done and add years individually. --Sam

I've just started splitting the page into A, B, C.. etc. pages. I'll give it a rest now for any further comments, especially regarding format and information to include, before I go any further. --Sam 13:38, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I have added a {{msg:BritishMPs}} to help at the top of the alphabetical pages --Henrygb 10:29, 27 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

Historic MPs

edit

Hello, Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere, preferably on-line of everyone who was MP in a particular year, or returned in a particular election, as I'm trying to track down some MPs from the first half of the 18th century. I'm going to be adding some parliamentary speeches to wikisource and I'm finding it hard to get any information on the authors beyond the names (in some cases only the last names are attributed to the speakers). I want to, at least, create a link to a wikipedia page (I'll need to create them & they'll be stubs but its something) but I'm stuck as I can't verify who some of the people I want to add are (Eg Colonel Mordaunt?, Archibald Hutcheson, Thomas Lutwyche), whether they already listed on Wikipedia (eg under later titles, etc) or anything about them (eg birth & death dates) other than the fact they gave speeches in the Commons. Can anyone help? AllanHainey 14:20, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

They're listed here by constituency, including pre-1707 MPs in most (perhaps all) cases.

Thanks but the link is dead, do you have another source. AllanHainey 11:35, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh it must have died in the last week; I did use it just a few days ago. It's worth waiting a few days and trying again, I guess. Mtiedemann 12:10, 25 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

see now Leigh Rayment's Peerage Pages [self-published source] [better source needed]. Peterkingiron (talk) 09:32, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rename to United Kingdom?

edit

This series of articles is badly named. The text says that it refers to MPs of the United Kingdom (i.e. those since 1801), but the article names say all "British MPs".

I propose renaming this article to "List of United Kingdom MPs", with a corresponding rename for each of the per-letter pages, e.g. List of British MPs: A to List of United Kingdom MPs: A.

Any objections? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:38, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

no comments at all, so I renamed it earlier today. I have alos restructured Category:British MPs, moving aeverything related to the UK Parliament to Category:Members of the United Kingdom Parliament. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:26, 4 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Trouble is that it now contains names that sat in English parliaments. Eg List of United Kingdom MPs: H: Thomas Harrison (1646 - ?). Should names before the first act of union be removed or should the article be renamed? --PBS (talk) 10:23, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Criminal convictions

edit

Does anyone know where I could obtain a list of criminal convictions carried by current MPs?--feline1 (talk) 17:52, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

It used to be the case that a criminal conviction would bar someone from sitting as an MP and I believe that is still the case. - Galloglass 18:56, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
