Notable Fictional Midshipmen?
editI have added Jake Huard from the film Annapolis to the list of fictional alumni although he is only portrayed fictionally as a Midshipman. It occurs to me that perhaps there should be an additional list, linked here and to the Midshipman article, of Notable Fictional Midshipmen. This would also include non-Academy midshipmen such as Frederick Marryat's Mr Midshipman Easy and C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower (Mr. Midshipman Hornblower). Personally I would only include fictional characters who have an entire book or film about them, and I would not include fictional characters who were a Midshipman earlier in their lives such as Jack Aubrey or Nicholas, Lord Ramage. Please share your thoughts... Ray Trygstad (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
Forking
editAppending "lost" remarks (aka Lessons Learned) during this sections spin-off process! It's another example of style concerns taking defacto priority over fact (substance) verification.
The adult lifelong learning (ALL-WinWIn) connections and mentoring relatonships with faculty are obscured. The eidting history of participating contributors also gets disconnected ...
Added category & linkage back to main article from which this listing was correctly cloned.

PDLog for USNA notable graduates section
editThe "Graduates famous outside the Navy" should probably me merged with the the other notable graduates. Jimmy Carter certainly acheived his greatest notoriety oustide the Navy, yet is not in the outside the Navy group. John McCain is notable both for his naval service and his post-naval career.
Only three astronauts among dozens graduated from the Academy are listed. One of the most well known USNA graduates, astronaut James Lovell is not listed. A deputy assistant cabinet secretary is listed, but 5 secretaries are not.
The whole list needs to be rationalized in terms of who to include, and their organization.

I don't think naming Cape Leahy is Adm. Byrd's claim to fame.
If no one objects, I'm going to remove it.

. No objections, so I removed it (now on famous graduates page).
MayerG 06:49, 18 January 2006 (UTC) (same person as 24.209.173.129).
Interesting adaptation of UNless Otherwise DIRected (UNODIR) collaboration practices.
From USNA social network analysis, the point of including Cape Leahy was to illustrate his respect for both Leahy's leadership model and sustained support of polar expeditions where Byrd moslty served as a figurehead after pre-staging support was completed by USCG RADM Richard Cruzen.

- As usual with these articles, people are now trying to include "everybody" who has squeaked by with an article. Probably should be renamed "most notable graduates". There are lots of 3-star admirals who aren't in here because they aren't famous for anything! Now someone is trying to put in a member of the Wyoming legislature. Gets down to the level of preposterous after a while IMO. Student7 (talk) 11:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that's standard for any kind of list of notables. If there are admirals who you think deserve articles that don't have them then create those articles. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:58, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- I wasn't complaining! Some of these admirals just didn't serve when anything crucial was happening. Very capable people, but 3 and 4-star adimiral are common from USNA! Can't have them all! And yes, some deserve articles but just not in this list IMO. (Just read about WP:SEH. Too bad they don't have that for notables! :)Student7 (talk) 22:36, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Faculty; History
editThe article will have to be renamed, or the faculty moved back to the main article, or a separate article created for them. Were these two men even on the faculty?-- the included information is not clear. Given that only two supposed faculty are named, a separate page does not seem warranted yet. Also, the faculty section contains some irrlevant (to a list of notable graduates) bits of history (e.g. increased importance due to the Spanish American War) which should be in the main article, not here.--MayerG 16:26, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
I've done a bit more checking. I can find no evidence Maury was ever a faculty member at the Naval Academy. According to his Wikipedia entry, Sigsbee was assigned to the academy, but not clear that he was on the faculty (many officers and men are assigned to the Academy without being on its faculty). The entire faculty section is just a copy and paste from the History section of the main article. Can anyone provide evidence about the faculty status of these two?--MayerG 16:49, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Medal of Honor winners
editI think all Medal of Honor winners should be in here. There are quite a few.Student7 01:27, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Rhodes scholars, all-Americans, politicians
editMaybe should poll these separately, but thought that Rhodes scholars should be a forked article from here. An article because having many Rhodes scholars is indicative of scholarship and forked because of their young ages. They really don't merit an article based on the Rhodes scholarship alone. I wanted to note that in an imbedded comment and discussion in the new article.
Also, not many all-Americans (sports) figures listed. I think they should be in this article but don't want to overload it. Don't know how many there are!
I would think we should list the "three state governors" mentioned in the USNA.org history. I think the "200 congressmen" should also be listed BUT if done all at once would tend to overwhelm this list of naval VIPs. Your thoughts? (BTW I have no pointer to such a list and therefore might not be able to implement it that fast anyway). Student7 21:18, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Alumni sort order

Other stuff
edit- AF alumni article needs renamed for consistency
- AF and USMA are in grad order. Should we keep alpha and change them or change USNA to grad order
- What order should the topics be in (Nobel, Astronauts, etc)
- Coast Guard and Merchant Marine don't have alumni articles, just sections in their academy articles
— Rlevse • Talk • 12:40, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
- Since the grad order is being used in the others, that should be how we do it here, I've already done that for the Astronaut section. Missing articles would depend on the number of alumni we can find. -MBK004 20:46, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Honorary members
editDo honorary members of a class fit into this list? I recently completed an article on Rear Admiral Edward L. Feightner who was made an honorary member of the class of 1942 for his work on the International Midway Memorial Foundation. Skeet Shooter (talk) 04:20, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
- No comments so I created an "Honorary members" section with Feightner as the first entry. Skeet Shooter (talk) 15:06, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- IMO, no. Just like awarding an "honorary doctorate" to a speaker at a commencement. They don't wind up on a list someplace. Some of the latter awardees don't have undergraduate degrees.
- Worse, note that this award was done, not by the Academy, but by the class. When are where are any "class" awardees mentioned? Should be in separate article since not Academy.Student7 (talk) 16:45, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
- You bring up some good points. The potential for trivializing USNA honorary class membership certainly exists, although the few I found seem to be well-deserved. Brian Chontosh, for example, is an honorary member of USNA class of 2006, and that fact is mentioned in his article. The bylaws of several USNA classes seem to recognize the issue and have rules in place to ensure high standards. For example:
- Honorary Class Memberships are awarded to ... individuals who have made significant contributions to the Association and to the United States Naval Academy. In order to ensure uniform standards for future individuals to be considered as Honorary Members of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1964 the following guidelines are established.
- Does this reduce your concerns? Are you OK with leaving the section to see how things progress? The list of alumni is very large already, so I don't have an issue with making a separate list, although the new list may be very small. Skeet Shooter (talk) 03:37, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

The bylaws of several USNA classes seem to recognize the issue and have rules in place to ensure high standards. For example:
- It is class-derived and not Academy-derived. What if a class made someone an "honorary professor" or "honorary coach" or "honorary commandant" or something. While they were careful in making their selection of "honorary," there is a reason they didn't choose another term. We wouldn't list "honorary commandant", nor should we list any other people so designated by a class.Student7 (talk) 14:48, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- I understand your concerns and respect your opinion, although I haven't found evidence of the behavior you suggest in the USNA honorary class selections I've reviewed. I also disagree that "there is no real criteria" as the selection criteria in the link I posted are present in the bylaws of multiple USNA classes. I do agree that honorary members are a gray area and may not be appropriate for this article, so I went ahead and removed the section. Skeet Shooter (talk) 14:51, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Supes and Commandants
editUnlike other lists of notables, these people must be notable outside of the Naval Academy. Supes and Commandants, except in the early days, are all graduates of the Naval Academy. Therefore they cannot be placed here for serving in those positions. There must be some other notable reason. Nationally known athlete, politician, etc. Student7 (talk) 23:51, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Leftwich Trophy Recipients
editI propose the addition of a section for recipients of the Leftwich Trophy under the Military figures category. The Leftwich Trophy commemorates the service and leadership of William Groom Leftwich, Class of 1953. The annual award recognizes one outstanding Marine captain serving in a ground combat MOS, so I believe it fits the requirement for being famous outside the Naval Academy. Below is a current list of nine Academy graduate recipients, out of 36 total to date.
