DiMaggio

edit

DiMaggio is said to have been automatically excommunicated on marrying Marilyn Monroe as in Catholicism this was deemed bigamy. (His first wife was alive and the marriage was not annulled) However only Wiki and its mirrors say this, but presumably he would've been denied sacraments during his period with Marilyn. I don't think he was formally excommunicated though and after the marriage to Monroe ended he apparently returned to the Church. In least I assume so as he is buried at the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. So he might not fit here as it's likely he was an ex-Catholic only for a period of his life.--T. Ummm, yeah b/c my understanding is that being excluded from the sacraments because one is divorced and remarried is not the same as excommunication. I'm taking this out. Carolynparrishfan 19:41, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Excommunication and formal defection from the Catholic Church are not the same. An excommunicated Catholic is still a Catholic, just one banned from certain sacraments, offices, and processes in the Church. Moreover, attempting a marriage invalidly, as DiMaggio did, does not render either party invalid. Henry VIII of England

edit

Henry didn't become Anglican - it was only started in the reign of his daughter, Elizabeth I. He remained Catholic until his death - although an ex-communicated one. During his reign it was a crime punishable by death to be protestant ... in Henry's eyes there was only one Christian church and he appointed himself its leader within the realm of England. He went to mass each day, forbade the translation of the Bible into the vernacular and followed the Catholic faith without exception. Francis Hannaway (talk) 10:09, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Many more references are needed

edit

We cannot rely on Wikipedia article links to document that any of these people have left the Catholic Church. We need reliable secondary sources which clearly state all of the facts asserted in this article. Therefore I have tagged here with {{refimprove}} and I intend to start cross-checking for unverifiable cases and removing them from this list. Any assistance or discussion would be appreciated! Thank you! Elizium23 (talk) 04:15, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

It has now been a year and a half since I tagged this article. In a little while I will start removing entries from the list because they do not conform to our verifiability policy. Simply pointing to a Wikipedia article does not constitute a reliable secondary source. Elizium23 (talk) 02:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Former catholic

edit

"According to Catholic canon law and Church teaching on baptism, nothing can render a person a "former Catholic". All individuals on this list, and in that study, are therefore still Catholics in the eyes of the Catholic Church."

There are no references, and that is obviously false, so I'm going to delete it. Nothing can render a person "unbaptized", but, for example, you can defect from the Catholic Church by being a heretic, since according to Canon 205 professing the faith is necessary to be a Catholic.
