Uh... did I miss something? Why is "Princess Iron Fan," the first animated feature from China, not listed on this page?75.66.205.236 (talk) 22:35, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well spotted, I've adlded it too the list.--Salix (talk): 12:41, 23 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Two pages saying the same thing?

edit

I noticed that there are two pages that seem to be about the same topic. This one, and Journey to the West in popular culture. This page looks more well developed to me. Should we delete one of these pages, or incorporate the latter one into this article? Bettspghtt (talk) 01:29, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I guess you're proposing a merge? Both pages are not exactly the same, but there are many overlapping parts. I support a merge. Lonelydarksky (暗無天日) contact me (聯絡) 03:02, 12 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
All items from the "list" in Journey to the West in popular culture were checked and copied into this article this way:
1) Only items (wikilinks) to articles not previously in List of media adaptations of Journey to the West were added.
2) If List of media adaptations of Journey to the West already included the link, no content from Journey to the West in popular culture was moved, as not to make the article unbalanced. If someone considers some information in Journey to the West in popular culture useful, feel free to add it to List of media adaptations of Journey to the West.
3) If List of media adaptations of Journey to the West did not include the link, all relevant content from Journey to the West in popular culture was moved. If someone considers some of it not useful, feel free to remove it from List of media adaptations of Journey to the West. The article needs formatting anyway.
4) Where I was unable to verify the connection between the adaptation and Journey to the West using wiki articles, I added [citation needed] template.
5) The article title still needs to be decided. I recommend to make future edits to List of media adaptations of Journey to the West only, and, perhaps after a discussion, to merge them formally. WikiHannibal (talk) 00:02, 17 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Merged after a month to prevent to prevent future edits of Journey to the West in popular culture by those who do not read the Talk page.--WikiHannibal (talk) 02:01, 24 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Red Boy

edit

Not sure if I should add more films with Red Boy, such as [1] = Battles With The Red Boy or [2]. What do you think? A separate list just for films featuring Red Boy would be a solution but the article (Red Boy) is not very good (to put it mildly), and perhaps the list would not be notable enough anyway. Compared to what is in the subsections Comics or Games of the List of media adaptations of Journey to the West, Red Boy films are probably more important. The Wang Film Productions company made the character in a female. It's different. Look at the Wang Film's website on the pictures of the film. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.251.172.94 (talk) 19:46, 28 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

RfC: References to Journey to the West in video games

edit

The video game section has been a subject of debate in the past because editors have not agreed on what and "adaptation" is. Specifically, should an interpreation of an individual character making an appearance in an iterative form in a video game be considered an adaptation of Journey to the West? DARTHBOTTO talkcont 17:43, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

OK, I join the talk in this talk page. The reason why I reverted some change before is not what I disagree. The guideline of this article is "Stories and characters were widely used, especially in Beijing opera, and has been adapted many times in modern film, television, stage, and other media." Hence, "Stories and characters" are even in the first paragraph. I wonder why you stressed "only stories." Didn't you see the "Stories and characters were......."? If this article only list the stories adaption, I think we can simply delete all contents in this article (like anime Dragon Ball) except Stage play. I don't think Dragon Ball is based on the stories of this novel but actually it is really inspired by "Journey to the west"User talk:Miracle dream 20:21, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
The difference between most of this page and the disputed content is that the aforementioned MOBAs have but mere obscure character and item references, rather than a relevant correlation. However, I would like to hear some third party comments. I'll respect the consensus. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 20:41, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
The explanation you gave when you deleted the contents in this article is [3] " meant for adaptations of the story".I revert it based on the reason "the guideline shows adaption not only stories but also character". It seems now you change to another reason. Does it mean you accept the character adaption in this article?
Actually Dragon Ball is the same case. It has mere obscure character and item references rather than a relevant correlation but it was also widely considered as an adaption of Journey to the west.
Then Journey to the West in popular culture was merged in this article. It means this article also contains the popular elements related to Journey to the West
I have a question. When I check the page [4], I only see your first comment here. How can I add my comment in this page?. Thank you.User talk:Miracle dream 21:18, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I wonder how long we should wait for a consensus. If there is no consensus here, should I revert the change? Anyway, I will wait for several days to see others' comment.User talk:Miracle dream 21:18, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Your comments don't belong on that page- only the query that I stated does. People will view yours should they visit this page to provide consensus. I'm not changing my view at all, since my comments were an explanation and not me rescinding anything; it is still my opinion that the MOBA interpretations of Sun Wukong are not fit adaptations of Journey to the West, which is only bolstered by the request on the page that individual character portrayals in media otherwise unrelated should not be considered. The standard RfC time frame is thirty days- if there is no consensus or input is given, the area of dispute may be reverted then, but not before. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 02:56, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
As I edited the list in the past, and did the merge you refer to, I believe the best thing would be to add the removed content to the articles about the characters/items it rfers to. A section "In popular culture" can be created in these articles fur such info. However, I did not do it myself because I do not like adding unsourced information to articles. I came across the same problem when editing articles focused on Red Boy (see above on this talk page) but did not create the "popular" section there bcs the Red Boy article is poor in general. Perhaps other items on the present list, for example from the Commics, manga and anime section, can be moved likewise.
The line what goes where will probably be the subject of a debate, which is fine; I think that traces of the original story, two or more characters, or other direct refereces to Journey to the West are enough fot keeping it here. Simply, if you immedaitely know which article other that this list to put it in, it does not belong to the list; if you hesitate between one or two articles (Monkey King or Red Boy?), keep it here. Dragonball would certainly pass this test, even though I am not very familiar with it. If my idea of moving the content does not appeal to you, then I prefer keeping the info in the list (and finding references...), rather than removing it. WikiHannibal (talk) 22:05, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Actually The Forbidden Kingdom and Dragon Ball both only use the characters in journey to the west and have different stories. The Forbidden Kingdom only uses the character monkey king (no other characters from journey to west). Dragon Ball use the name of sun wukong but not the portrayal (Goku is an humanoid alien not a monkey). These two were also listed in this article. Then the guideline also claimed this article contains character adaption. I think the removed contents fit the character adaption.I think media which use the character portrayals and names may be also list in this article. In fact, the removed contents clarified that these games only use the character sun wukong so that reader will not consider these games use the story of this novel or other characters.
Moreover as I said before, Journey to the West in popular culture was merged in this article. Hence, this article also contains the popular elements related with Journey to the west (not only adaption). Base on this reason, I think should add the removed contents. User talk:Miracle dream 06:47 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Just a brief remark, The Forbidden Kingdom (according to thew wiki article) and Journey have more in common: "a dream of a battle", Five Elements Mountain, the name of Jason Tripitikas (who releases Monkey King from his imprisonment) - maybe subtle hints and definitely "loosely based" by I would keep it in the List. As for Dragonball, isn't it true that Goku had a monkey tail, was taught his skills by an elder, and Oolong and Gyū-Maō from List of Dragon Ball characters are similar to Zhu Bajie and Bull Demon King? In general I prefer keeping the info here over loosing it. The guideline can be changed. But I strongly recommend to provide references to those items on the list whose connection to Journey is not self-explanatory (their own wiki article). --WikiHannibal (talk) 14:09, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Are you saying that the mentions of the MOBAs should remain, since they include the character Sun Wukong? DARTHBOTTO talkcont 20:13, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't know anything about these games and their connection to Journey except for what was in the article. I was trying to provide a broader picture how to deal eith these issues. To answer your question, based on the info theat was in the article, I would move all of the items to Ruyi Jingu Bang and Sun Wukong, provide a reference, and create sections such as "Ruyi Jingu Bang in popular culture" in that article, and explain why such info is added to that article. If this cannot be done, I would keep it in the List, tag it with [citation needed] and wait. --WikiHannibal (talk) 20:39, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, what's in aforementioned games are individual depictions of Sun Wukong with varying back stories, but no other correlation to Journey to the West. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 01:53, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Since this RfC.has gone nowhere, I'll not contest the implementation of the loose mentions in adaptations. Though I disagree with it, I'll let it go. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 00:25, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Chinyuuki

edit

I miss the Manga/Anime "Chinyuuki: Tarou to Yukaina Nakama-tachi" under Anime/Manga adaptions. The story is about a violent, trouble-making kabuki player, who joins a traveling monk. He happens to be have been transformed into a monkey by a curse and together they travel on a colorful journey west to ancient southern Asia. It's not just based on "Journey to the west", it retells the story of "Journey to the west" in a crazy and comical way (parody-like).

a hugely popular korean animation based on Journey to the west in the 90's.
