Completing the 2020 update

@SiefkinDR: Correct me if I'm wrong, but your approach appears to have been to provide the 2020 figures of whatever museums were included on our 2019 list where you could find them, and move the others to the end of the list. I can understand the motivation for doing it this way, but the resulting table is confusing to the reader because although we say that we list the forty-five most-visited museums in 2020, the list is not ranked by the number of 2020 visitors, and in fact it lists 2020 figures for 48 museums, not 45. It's also problematic in that until we find 2020 data from all countries, we are not in a position to claim that we know what the forty-five (or whatever number) most-visited museums in 2020 actually are. You've also removed the Mevlana Museum yet again without seeking a change in consensus on this talk page, but one is unfortunately used to that kind of behaviour from you at this point.

I have found 2020 figures for Chinese and Taiwanese museums and can update those figures this weekend. Museum visitation in those countries did not drop as much as they did elsewhere around the world. I will also try to find 2020 figures for the Mevlana Museum and the National Folk Museum of Korea.

After I update the figures, my suggestion would be to reorganize the list so that we do in fact rank museums over a certain threshold (500,000?) by 2020 figures. The rest we could put in a separate table of museums that received over two million visitors in 2019 but fewer than the threshold number in 2020. Cobblet (talk) 14:18, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for finding more current figures for some of the Asian museums in the most-visited museum list. That will be as great improvement.

In answer to your questions I used the ranking for the top twenty museums as it was given in the current TEA-AECOM theme index, then filled in the others from the regional TEA-AECOM, Art Newspaper and some national sources. The rankings in the TEA-AECOM and Art Newspaper list are sometimes inconsistent, and there are some contradictions within the different parts of the TEA-AECOM list, but nothing major.

I think the list should only include 2020 figures, now that we have most of them. Don't see any reason to keep 2019 figures, particularly since we should start getting 2021 figures in the new few months.

I think your idea of putting them in rank order is good. The Art Newspaper and TEA-AECOM put some of their figures in the older order, more for nostalgia, I think. I also agree with the idea of a cutoff number of 500,000 should work. It may cut out a few big museums that have had hard times, like the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, but that should be corrected soon in the list for 2021, as all the museums had higher attendance this year.

I took out Mevlana Museum again because the Wikipedia article about the museum makes it clear to me it is a mausoleum and religious shrine, attracting a huge number of pilgrims but not having a normal museum collection or exhibits, But I was pretty sure you would put it back.

I'll refer you to ThePromenader's response to you here that it should be reliable sources which we should be following, not editors' own preconceptions of what a "normal" museum collection is and their reading of Wikipedia articles based on that preconception; and my research into what reliable sources say about the Mevlana Museum here.

I'll only refer to 2020 figures on the main list and rank the museums by those figures. On the subsidiary list of museums that received over two million visitors in 2019 but fewer than half a million in 2020, I'll give 2019 as well as 2020 figures where available. "Subsidiary List" of 2019 figures

I don't see the purpose of having a "Subsidiary list" of museums with 2019 figures. Has the Chinese government not yet updated these figures? 2020 figures are available for other Chinese and Asian museums. If 2020 figures are available, I think We should use them. if we don’t have 2020 figures, leave these museums out. Cordially, SiefkinDR (talk) 08:34, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum should be included. It is listed in the Art Newspaper as an art museum. It is not part of the Acropolis historica l site (though not far away) It is in a single building, and has separate management and admissions from the archeologial site..
