Adding new nicknames

edit

Before you make an addition to this article you should consider the following:

  • Ensure you are able to edit the table correctly, please preview before saving
  • Ensure that the nickname you are adding is used by professionals or a recognised social group. Wikipedia is not a dictionary of slang, this page is meant as a reference guide, not as a respository for any nicknames people can think up on-the-spot or that they once used with friends.
  • When ensuring the above; please make sure you reference the location from which the nickname has come. See Referencing below NinjaKid (talk) 20:12, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Referencing

edit

When referencing you should follow the below rules unless someone can come up with a better idea:

  • A nickname discovered without explanation should have the nickname referenced and an explanation given in your own words
  • A nickname discovered with explanation should have the explanation referenced (It is logical, therefore, to assume that the nickname has come from the same source, why explain without refering to the alias?)
  • A nickname discovered with no explanation and which is not understood by the user should be marked, referenced and [citation needed] added in the explanation column.
  • A nickname you made up should not be put in this article NinjaKid (talk) 20:12, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'd be a lot more comfortable with this list if it had a better source for so many of the names than the "holdem secrets" website. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 05:08, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
The "holdem sercrets" website is the 2nd most difinitive list of nicknames on the net, so most of these have been pulled from there, however, the majority of those are used in more than one location and could be given additional references to support their validity. The only reason this hasn't been done is because there are so many of them, it's a big job. NinjaKid (talk) 14:06, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
What makes it "difinitive"? --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 14:24, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well you're more than welcome to find alternative references for them if you'd like, I assure you there are plenty of sources out there as the 100+ references already on the page suggests. NinjaKid (talk) 21:38, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'll just pull anything that doesn't have an alternate source, then. Otherwise, we could just replace this entire article with a pointer to "Holdem secrets" (which a more suitable place for non-encyclopedic collections like this, anyway.) --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 23:49, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Formal names

edit

Might it be worth noting that certain nicknames are also formal names? For example, with Jacks, they were known as Knaves before 1864 (see Jack (playing card). They are also known as Bowers in games including Euchre. The Euchre pages notes that Bower comes from the German word Bauer, meaning "farmer." Ralphy512 (talk) 04:55, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

These are included in the "Single card" section. NinjaKid (talk) 08:33, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Maybe Q6 as arnold palmer's ex-wife has to do with the "kissing his balls" joke from Johnny Carson show? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.211.61.180 (talk) 07:21, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

76 Dead Baby

edit

Vote to remove "Dead German baby it Aushwitz". Seems offensive, the source doesn't work and the reference is not clear. In the very least, typos should be corrected. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Metukkalihis (talkcontribs) 08:57, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removed on 26-02-2011. for the following reasons:

I second that decision. JaeDyWolf ~ Baka-San (talk) 15:43, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pi

edit

Um, why is 34A46 called pi? DAVilla (talk) 19:10, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Typo maybe? Should be 3A4A6. Sagittarian Milky Way (talk) 18:05, 15 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

74 Ghost dog

edit

Hi, I can't say with authority, but I think the likely reason is because the ghost dog character considers himself a lordless samurai. A ronin, and the famous story and movie 47 Ronin. I seem to recall the character was depicted reading Book of 5 Rings by Musashi, so he would have probably been familiar with at least the movie 47 ronin. Iforget how to sign its been so long. Usenet referencing

edit

I pulled one entry from this article which caught my eye because it was referenced only to Usenet and thus had no validity as a reliable source. In fact, it turns out there are about another dozen with similar references. Per WP:UNSOURCED, I propose to remove them all. Before I do, has anyone got better sources for them? Formatting fixes

edit

Can someone fix the following table problems? I'm not skilled enough at table formatting to fix the problems:

  • The "Joker" row sort of disintegrates at the end of the Single cards table
  • "Tucson Monster" being misaligned in the "KJ" section
  • "Sad Ole Bess" disintegrates in the "Q6" section

QQ = P-CO

edit

"The last two queens of England." This isn't sourced and no explanation is given. 68.156.95.34 (talk) 09:05, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Purge-ry

edit

It's time to purge a bunch of unsourced entries. It's gonna seem pretty brutal, but it seems like a better idea that having a thousand citation notices peppering the article. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 22:49, 7 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to suggest an alternate viewpoint. I'd rather some work was done on sourcing, rather than remove unsourced entries. From my personal knowledge of the playing card industry, the ones listed here do belong on this page. Having some unsourced entries for now seems better than a very incomplete article.Gregorytopov (talk) 05:05, 2 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
The title is also wrong. This is overwhelmingly a list of Poker card combination nicknames used in America. They are not single card nicknames; they are not used in other games and I doubt that they are used in Poker circles elsewhere in the world. I suggest that all the poker terms are split off into their own article called something like "List of playing-card nicknames in Poker" or even "List of playing-card nicknames in American Poker" and this one focusses on non-Poker nicknames. Outline

edit

I think it is a good idea to create a section for the pocket pairs, instead of parking 'em on "XY higher card".--ManuelNeuerFan1 (talk) 17:14, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Article is poker heavy

edit

This is overwhelmingly a list of American poker terms that most card players have never heard of. I therefore propose to move the Texas Hold'Em and Poker Hand Nicknames to a new article so this can stay focussed on more generic names as the title implies. I'll then add to it and cull any unsourced material. Bermicourt (talk) 10:09, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

That's done. Bermicourt (talk) 19:21, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Queen of Spades

edit

In Hearts it is sometimes called the B17ch. (Edited for delicate sensibilities) Jokem (talk) 01:18, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

One eyed Jack

edit

The term One eyed Jack redirects here, yet the page has no information about it. It's not clear where that information would fit into the table either. They are the Jack of Hearts and the Jack of Spades, which are normally depicted in profile. Some writer from Dorset I think (talk) 11:21, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
