Overlay or split?

edit

I have long wondered what Canada Post will do in Whitehorse when they near the end of the supply of Y1A codes. They are already into the Y1A 7xx range, and there are some Y1A 9xx codes already in use.

Will they do a split? Probably not, since it would mean changing a lot of codes in the city.

More probably, Canada Post will do an overlay, putting Y1B on top of Y1A. Myself, I think they should do a split now, allowing several years of permissive addressing. Downtown should keep Y1A, as should selected government and major business facilities in the rest of the city. Points along the Alaska Highway south and Hamilton Boulevard should change to Y1C, while points north of the Hamilton Boulevard intersection with the Alaska Highway, including Takhini subdivision, Kopper King, Range Road, Porter Creek, should change to Y1H. The existing local code would stay the same. At least three years after permissive addressing ends, the now-unused codes in each range could then start to be assigned. Y1B would be reserved as an overlay on Y1A for downtown, Marwell and Riverdale. I skip Y1E and Y1G as visually similar with Y1C and Y1A, and as rhymes with C.

But that's my idea. It'll probably be a complete overlay by Y1B.

I also think that in the Northwest Territories, Hay River should have been changed to X2A from X0E when they started putting in codes according to supermailbox location. Yellowknife once was a single postal code (X0E 1H0, I think), but not long after codes were introduced, it was changed to address-based codes (X1A). GBC (talk) 05:52, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
