Intra-year Chronology

Where possible, should we arrange entries within a single year by their date of release? For example m199h (if it actually existed) was the first of the RPGs for the Plato, followed by pedit5. Consistency

There is no consistency between the year-specific sublists on here. For example:

• Some lists are sorted alphabetically within each year, some are sorted alphabetically across the two years, and some have seemingly random order
• Some places using CROSS for cross-platform, and others just listing individual platforms
• Some places using country codes for COO (e.g. JP for Japan) and some giving the actual country name
• Some using newlines to separate multiple developers/publishers, some using commas or templates
• Some of the sublists have a "release" column which tells you if it's an original or port, others don't
• Some lists specify the country in the release year everywhere, others don't, and the style of mentioning it differs, for example using the template or just using the small tags

It makes it really annoying when adding games, because depending on the year of release, you have use different markup when adding the game. Can we agree on some conventions and standardise across all the sublists? Kidburla (talk) 21:05, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

It's been over two weeks and no response so I'd like to make some proposals:

• Ordering: All sublists should be reordered to be by year and then alphabetically within each year. Perhaps with the temporary exception of the 2020-2021 list which currently has an overall alphabetical order but I would look to eventually change this one too.
• Use of CROSS: Remove all use of CROSS from pages and instead just list the individual platforms.
• COO format: Change all COO values using full country names to be using two-letter country-codes. Also, remove use of "NA"/"EU" as those are not countries, and use the actual country instead (e.g. US, CA, GB, FR etc)
• Release column: Add the "release" column to all lists which are missing it. The column can be empty initially, and populated as we go along, as it will be a big job to move all of the bracketed release types into the release column. But it means that new entries can start to use that column properly.
• Use of PAL: Replace PAL with EU as a release region.
• Use of INT: Replace INT with WW as a release region.
• Subgenre nomenclature: Use the nomenclature from the vgclegend template, for example "Dungeon crawl" rather than "Dungeon crawler". However, some terms such as JRPG, CRPG, WRPG should be removed and replaced with the actual subgenre such as Turn-based, Action RPG etc. CRPG/WRPG is redundant as these are all video games, and JRPG is not a subgenre, it just refers to RPGs made in Japan, which is already derivable by checking the COO column. (JRPGs are typically classified as either Turn-based or Action RPG, depending on the game.)
• Platform nomenclature: Change to use the nomenclature from the vgclegend template, for example "DROI" rather than "DROID" and "NX" rather than "NS". Remove any abbreviations for non-listed platforms and just put the platform name such as Xbox Series X/S, Stadia etc. Exception: PS5 can be used instead of PlayStation 5.
• Number of entries per game: Gradually tend to remove (and don't add more) entries which are simply ports. Each game should have one entry with all platforms listed in it. Remakes can be listed separately. For example, if a game was released on the NES and then straight port on the Nintendo Switch (not a remake), we can have a 1980s entry with the platforms as NES, NS. This is consistent with the article granularity on Wikipedia.
• Redlinks: We should not have any redlinks in the list and these should be removed in favour of plain text (italicized).
• Release years: For new entries, always use the template (vgrtbl); eventually we should try to change all the existing lines to use the template but as it will take a long time then just do it gradually.
• Newlines in wikitext: For new entries, use newlines between each column; eventually we should try to change all the existing rows to use this format but as it will take a long time then just do it gradually.

I didn't include standardizing on the multi publisher/developer formats here, because in many cases we don't already have info on which countries each company corresponds to, so I think it's fine to keep them inconsistent (using <br/> or the vgrelease template) and just use whichever one is used on the actual article.

Does anyone have any objections to any of the above? I feel I am talking to myself here so if nobody has responded after a week or so then I'll just assume that I'm the only one who cares about this list and nobody is opposed to the above consistency changes. As there does not seem to be any objections, I've started the process with List of role-playing video games: 2006 to 2007 (as that happened to be the one I was working on editing) and will continue with this and other articles. I've edited the post above to include one more area around use of INT. Tasks still to do for 2006-2007 include replacing JRPG/CRPG and adding the release column. Merge talk pages

Each sublist has its own talk page, along with this central talk page, which I think is unnecessary. It means that any comments will be split across 20 separate pages. We should merge all the talk pages together, i.e. move their content to this central page and then change them to redirect to this central page. This would be consistent with other video game lists on Wikipedia. Any objections to doing this? Kidburla (talk) 21:41, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

2022-2023

It looks like it was previously deleted because of WP:TOOSOON. As that is no longer applicable, I'm going to re-create the page. Praemonitus (talk) 17:23, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
