80's history

edit

Lowry Park Zoo used to be mainly a park with rides, including a skyride and a mini-rollercoaster. There was a small "storybook" area with scenes from fairy tales. There was also a magic show with Pockets the Clown. The "zoo" part was very small and all the animals were in cages. There was a monkey named Joey and people would give him cigarettes that he would smoke. In 1987, one of the cars flew off the track of the rollercoaster, injuring four people.

Not part of Lowry Park

edit

Lowry Park and Lowry Park Zoo have always been separate entities. This article supports the idea that they are one. Lowry Park is owned by the city of Tampa and run by the city of Tampa Parks department. Lowry Park Zoo is owned by the non-profit organization called "The Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa" and it's land (within Lowry Park) is leased from the city of Tampa. Many residents and tourists alike are not aware of this fact and it seems this lack of knowledge is carried all the way to wikipedia. I, despite my social graces (lol), am no wikipedia editor so I leave this information in the hopes that someone who is more experienced can correct the problems this article has. I'd also like to point out that there is no "Lowry Park" article due to this confusion, but I hope that changes. :)

history

edit

I included many of the details mentioned above in the history section, tho I don't remember the clown or the smoking monkey and couldn't find any references to them anywhere.

Should the history be first, or stay where it is? I'm thinking that most readers will be more interested in the details of the zoo today, which is why I placed it further down the page. Zeng8r 22:47, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

"zoo advocates" site

edit

It's debatable whether or not the Tampa Zoo Advocates site should be mentioned in this article, but I'm thinking it should probably stay. What can't stay is the deceptively labeled extra link to the TZA site, especially when the real official zoo site is replaced in the process.

This is not a place for politicking. The TZA site is listed at the end of the article for readers to click on if they wish. Anything more than that is both unnecessary and unacceptable according to wikipedia standards. Thanks. Zeng8r (talk) 01:08, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please stop inserting the TZA link into multiple and inappropriate places in the article. The group is mentioned in the text and is the second link listed in the "external resources" section. Adding multiple instances of the same link or redirecting a link to go to a different site than the one listed (as a user did a few weeks ago) violate wikipedia guidelines per Wikipedia:Spam. Thanks... Zeng8r (talk) 00:17, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Goodfellas connection

edit

I just rewatched Goodfellas and noticed that Lowry Park Zoo is not actually used after all. The sign in the scene says "Tampa City Zoo" and the set looks nothing at all like Lowry Park, either before or after the mid-80s renovation. Oh well. Zeng8r (talk) 04:24, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
