Edit from Dom: One of the magfest organizers: If anyone associated with Magfest is editing the wikipedia page to say stuff about Magfest is or isn't a Donut, please stop. The wikipedia editors who are maintaining this page have enough to deal with and we want this page to be as real as possible. I also mentioned in our staff slack if anyone's doing this to please stop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:14A:C080:31C0:31D6:2F90:339E:FAEC (talk) 18:37, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
- PERHAPS the page should be semi-protected? It's probably the only way to cut down on the vandalism. Some IP editors think that calling MAGFest a donut is HIGH-larious. -- Doctorx0079 (talk)
What is "MAGFest is a donut"? As far as I can tell, it is a stupid inside joke and it needs to not be continued here as it will confuse readers. -- Doctorx0079 (talk) 01:12, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
THE GENRE OF MAGFEST IS NOT "DONUT". Any time "donut" is added to the "genre" category it will be reverted. -- Doctorx0079 (talk) 20:54, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- This doesn't seem like something that is remotely notable about the event - and if it is then what makes it notable over other event related memes? The reference page for this section is a link to a Reddit page asking about it... ElanHR (talk) 07:39, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

- Information to be added or removed: Paul Birtel the former Executive Director was accused of abuse and harassment as well as retaliatory behavior. it seems that the board at the time allowed and fueled the toxic environment.
- Explanation of issue: The Board and Paul Birtel Fired 3 people that the public feel was retaliatory. Also, the public felt that demanding they sign NDA's and documents forbidding them to sue the organization after they were let go was unjust. All the office employees had filed HR complaints RE: the Executive Director's Abusive Behavior.

- Dom here, I was a board member during this time period, so obviously I have a huge COI to declare. I just wanted to point out a small thing and request an edit from a non-conflicted editor: the current wikipedia page says Paul Birtel fired "three board members". He did fire folks, but it was one employee and 3 volunteers (not defending anything, mostly just pointing out the distinction these folks were not board members). The linked sources that cover this go into this just fine.
- Also, I think the current article also covers it just fine but, as a guy that was there, 3 of us (myself included) on the board (out of 6 total board members, plus the executive director Paul Birtel, who gets a vote) vigorously opposed many of Paul Birtel's actions in this era, including the firings. The 3 of us didn't have enough votes to stop these actions. There's letters and public statements floating around to support this, though, I don't know if any of it is relevant/notable enough to change the page. Just providing some breadcrumbs should anyone be inclined and, once more, noting my GIANT COI on this subject. Thanks all.
furlough
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
- Information to be added or removed: Due to COVID-19 the organization was forced to furlough all of its Employees starting in October and ending on July 3 2021 for all employees. Although, the organization did a fundraiser on September 13, 2020 and raised $112,650 in hopes to allow the corporation to survive not having a event this year that earned them money. Their was plans to hold a virtual event with the money generated from the fundraiser as well as to have the employees have shorter furlough periods. With the communities support they were able to make most of the furlough period so the most of the staff were able to work 50% to 75%. The public hoped the fundraiser would allow them to have a virtual event. The virtual event had to be scraped after the Events Director and a few of the volunteers were let go at the worse time also, due to the backlash that was caused by the public spearheaded by friendsofmag.com

Please Make ANY CHANGES TO MY EDITS AS DEEMED NESSASARY, Also, I could not find any sources dictating the furlough of staff as such I understand that that section may need to focused more on the fundraiser
- Per WP:RS and WP:IS, Reddit is not a suitable source. Please find a reliable, independent source (a Reddit post by the organization is neither), and provide a suitable text with a clear proposal of where it would suit the article best. Thank you. Ferkijel (talk) 22:07, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

- Information to be added or removed: Magfest has two charity departments that benefit Child's Play. All charity activities benefit Child's Play by giving 100% of all proceeds to them. The Speed running fundraiser is run by MAGFast formally Mega Man-athon.

Per WP:RS Facebook is not a reliable source. Please provide a source that is reliable and independent, with a detailed proposal of where you suggest to enter the proposed text. Thank you. Ferkijel (talk) 22:04, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Article appears limited to video games
editSuper MAGFEST includes a substantial presence of non-electronic gaming, including a number of ballrooms dedicated to board, card, role playing, etc. There is generally an indie develop er showcase for "physical" games, a huge library of games for check out, dedicated spaces for DnD Adventurers league and Pathfinder, etc. https://www.nationalharbor.com/whats-magfest-a-guest-blog-about-one-of-national-harbors-most-immersive-events/ Nrjank (talk) 01:41, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
- The source isn't reliable; it reads like a promotional advertisement or press release. The source itself has "a guest blog" in the title and most likely was written by someone who was involved with MAGFest or was paid by MAGFest. If a WP:RS source can back this up, the content could be added or elaborated on in a neutral tone. Sennecaster (What now?) 06:34, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- understood and thanks. why i noted it here instead of trying to shoehorn it in on the main. will update if an appropriate source can be found. Nrjank (talk) 16:11, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- a bit weak on detail, but it does give very brief mention to broader gaming. Perhaps worth adding elsewhere in the article though as the article is tagged as in need of more secondary sources: https://www.washingtonpost.com/express/2019/01/03/marylands-magfest-is-super-sized-celebration-video-game-culture/ Nrjank (talk) 16:40, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
