giz galasi

edit

Im doubting that it is common to call it `Giz galasi`; This is just english-ification if not touristification of the original, local name in azeri. This name is not common --ArazZeynili (talk) 11:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Maiden Tower (Baku)Qal'eh Dokhtar, Baku – This building is a castle and the article in Farsi Wikipedia confirm it [1] And it has Sassanid architecture that has similar names in other places such as Qal'eh Dokhtar Or Qal'eh Dokhtar, Saveh. POS78 (talk) 10:13, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Leaning to oppose per Grove Encyclopedia of Islamic Art & Architecture 2009 p237 "The oldest surviving buildings in Azerbaijan date from the 5th–6th century ce , including the basilica at Kum, the three-tiered church at Lekit, and the foundations of the Maiden's Tower, the core structure in the center of Baku." • Strong oppose. "Maiden Tower" is the obvious WP:COMMONNAME here:

Alternate name

edit

@POS78: The towers you've mentioned here are all actually called that. While Maiden Tower is not and has not been called "Qal'eh Dokhtar" in its modern history. We could put that name in lead (and bold as you've tried) only if it was a significant alternate name (e.g. over 10% of sources use it, per WP:NCGN). However barely 1% of sources use that name, therefore it's not a significant alternate name:

  • Results for "Maiden Tower" "Baku" on Google Scholar: 254; Results for "Qal'eh Dokhtar" "Baku" on Google Scholar: 3 — 1.22%
