Allegations

Can't find anything about the allegations in the news. Neither the person who added it nor the person who deleted it used edit summaries, so it's difficult to tell where this information came from, if it's true, or why it was deleted. Please try to use edit summaries in the future, thanks. Badagnani 01:02, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

For completeness, this was for the wrong Yunupingu, and was then overturned anyway. "Fourth wife's violence order overturned". News Limited. October 12, 2006. Retrieved June 4, 2013. --Mark Hurd (talk) 19:24, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

After death it is the custom amongst many Aboriginal communities, including Dr Yunupingu's, to no longer use the living name of the deceased. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Aboriginal_avoidance_practices#Avoidance_of_naming_the_dead In respect of this tradition should we amend the name of the article, and avoid using his first name within the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.10.111.38 (talk) 23:00, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't believe that this is a widely adhered to policy on wikipedia – similar name avoidance is found in other cultures too. Some media reports use Dr Yunupingu but the vast majority have used also his adoptive first name. If this policy were instituted then the article on his band, Yothu Yindi, (and other related ones) would have to be re-written. Many articles, including this one, would have trouble differentiating between the various Yunupinugus mentioned without differentiation by use of forenames. Note also that the use of a deceased person's image is avoided in some indigenous Australian communities but most media outlets have displayed his: generally without an appropriate warning for indigenous people.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 07:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest this however be added as a footnote reference rather than for the whole article; refer to the last paragraph of this link https://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-06-03/former-yothu-yindi-frontman-m-yunupingu-dies/4728518

"Yunupingu's family has requested his full name and photos not be used for cultural reasons." Brichards85 (talk) 20:23, 16 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
