Talk:Mario Kart: Double Dash
Mario Kart: Double Dash was one of the Video games good articles, but it has been removed from the list. There are suggestions below for improving the article to meet the good article criteria. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Tracks
editThe Track Section is needless game guide information. It serves no real purpose here. I'm removing it. DurinsBane87 (talk) 18:29, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Reception
editThe following two phrases should be removed from the article:
1) "It has sold approximately 4.67 million copies worldwide" 2) "In the United States, the game was the seventh best-selling Nintendo GameCube title as of October 2006, according to the NPD Group."
Neither of these phrases are accurate.
The article accurately states that Double Dash sold 3.8 million in North America and accurately states that it sold an additional 802,000 in Japan. The assessment that the game "has sold approximately 4.67 million copies worldwide", however, is not accurate. The 4.67 million figure was obviously obtained by adding the North American and Japanese sales numbers together. This number clearly doesn't take into account sales figures from Europe or other territories, and suggesting that the 4.67 million figure represents "worldwide" sales is not accurate. Therefore, the sentence "It has sold approximately 4.67 million copies worldwide" should be removed from the article.
The article also suggests that game was the seventh best-selling Nintendo GameCube title as of October 2006. The link provided suggests that the game was the seventh best-selling game IN October 2006. It does not, however, suggest that the game was the best selling game AS OF October 2006. These are two completely different things. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CoolioMcAwesome (talk • contribs) 16:56, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
Misc
editTwo small quarms, firstly it says followed by the console releases of mkds and wii. Last I checked I thought the DS was a handheld gaming device, not a console.
Also someone has written (and cited?) that the power slide technique was improved on its predecessors. Umm, surely thats opinion as I personally prefer mk64s mt'ing. I would like to it change to re-invented? (not hopping into an mt)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomasgx1 (talk • contribs) 21 April 2009

Howdy, I'll be your reviewer for this session. My style is to typically bring issues up in sections, (Lead, Gameplay, Development, etc) below the posted GA criteria. Once an overall issue is taken care of I will strike it out of my comments below and mark the issue with a green check in the criteria. Feel free to address issues as I find them, I will let you know when I am finished with a first full check on the article.

Mario Kart: Double Dash‼ → Mario Kart: Double Dash!! –
Changing ‼ to !! ; I do not believe there is any reason to have a technically difficult name (the character is not present on keyboards) in lieu of a more accessible name; especially considering the minute differences and the fact it doesn't change the appearance of the title to readers & editors. I have no seen any justification for the odd use of the ‼ character; the original move on 16 January 2009 by Kaptincapo was explained as "(moved Mario Kart: Double Dash!! to Mario Kart: Double Dash‼: unicode)"; there have been notoriously many attempts to move, rename, redirect or otherwise correct the title. Salvidrim! 10:48, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- Support: Not sure I would ever have noticed this without it being pointed out, but it makes no sense to use this character when !! conveys the exact same information, doesn't cause problems for those using non-unicode browsers/fonts, and reflects usage on the game's official website. AJSham 13:32, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

- I have recently noticed that having two exclamations marks instead of the single unicode character of a double exclamation breaks a few things, specifically in tables. I think that may have been the reasoning behind the initial move to that title. If there are no objections I will consider changing it back so it doesn't break wikicode. For a specific example, see List of Mario racing games's history. Salvidrim! 05:53, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yea, so, after it broke another table I moved it back to the unicode character. Sorry for the time it took. I'll also take it up to VPT. :) ·Salvidrim!· ✉ 23:30, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

editIt seems this is still under constant improvement and was nominated by SpaceChimp1992, who hadn't previously edited the article. It's probable the nominator believed (wrongly) that the improvement drive was completed. For these reasons, I will put this review On Hold for a few days while the editors working on it (primarily 22dragon22burn & 108.234.202.13) complete the improvements. Lede
editIt was succeeded by the handheld game Mario Kart DS (2005), the console game Mario Kart Wii (2008) and the handheld game Mario Kart 7 (2011) respectively, and the arcade games in the Mario Kart Arcade GP series. - This sentence seems to have poor structure and is probably superfluous anyways. No need to mention every following game.It mentions special items, are these described later in the article?- Described special items. Acesyksyk09 6:01 pm, Today (UTC−4) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Acesyksyk09 (talk • contribs)
It doesn't give any overview of the gameplay itself.
Gameplay
editThis section as a whole feels a lot like an instruction manual, giving details of the gameplay not necessarily crucial to understanding "how the game is played". It jumps right into the explanations of items, powerslides, etc. without taking the time to explain what the game is about; that it is a racing game, that there are items that can be picked up and used to attack or impede the other drivers, etc. The basics! If you had to explain "what this game is about" to someone who had never played a videogame, how would you do it? This is truly the most crippling issue in this article.Improvements have been made, but I still feel the Gameplay section focuses too much on the actual racing instead of the game's infrastructure; the game modes, specifically, need an explanation of what they are. Grand Prix should theoretically be mentioned first. The Battle Mode paragraph needs heavy restructuring. Mention the return of the battle mode, give a short overview (combat using items around a battle arena, not a race on a track, etc.). Then mention the various types: Balloon-popping, Shine Sprite, Bob-ombs. Separate Time Trials and expand a bit.- Ended up doing the final fixups myself. :)
Players cannot hold items behind the kart, making it more difficult to block incoming shells. - What do you mean hold items behind the kart? How is that crucial to understanding gameplay? No explanation of what a powerslide is.The game allows up to four players to compete in battle modes, two in Grand Prix mode, and one in time trials. - What are these modes?See above. In addition to the traditional balloon-popping battle game - What is this mode about?and their attributes in speed, acceleration, and weight - Odd wording, consider "as well as their speed, acceleration, and weight attributes".this mode is only available for 150 cc - What is 150cc? Completely unmentionned before.Lakitu reprises his role for the fourth time in the series as the official - "The official"? Precise.and taking them back on track with his fishing pole in case they fall off course during the race - them, they; too distant from what they're referencing. Replace the first with a synonym for "player".Shy Guys, Goombas, Nokis, Toadsworth, and many more - Wikilink; "and many more" is too imprecise. The screen determines the standings in a race, the current speed of the player's kart and incoming weapons. - "The screen" (already a vague term) doesn't determine anything. Are you trying to say it is giving the information to the player? Rephrase using "indicates" or something similar.Like the three previous Mario Kart games, players can pick up item boxes - This sentences says that the three previous Mario Kart games could pick up item boxes, which is nonsense. Please rephrase.with varying architecture and a constant arsenal of items. - "Constant" doesn't seem appropriate. Perhaps use "endless", or "replenishing". "Architecture" may be a too specific term; "layout" or a synonym may be preferable. As in previous installments, the battle arenas are enclosed, - Wait, what battle arenas? Completely unmentioned. Mention it in the part where you will discuss the "Battle Mode".The Grand Prix mode has the player race from any engine class–50 cc, 100 cc, 150 cc or "Mirror Mode". - "race from any engine class" doesn't seem to be correct english. Prefer a colon to a dash. Why are "" needed around Mirror Mode? Also wikilink the three classes.Other supporting characters included in this game are Shy Guys, Goombas, Nokis, Toadsworth, among others. - Again, wikilink these.- Nokis (from Super Mario Sunshine) do not have their own article nor do they appear in any subsections in articles for Mario characters. Is it okay if I just wikilink Nokis to the Super Mario Sunshine article? Acesyksyk09 21:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- If no information is available on WP about them, then I question whether it is even relevant to include them. Otherwise send to Super Mario Sunshine#Plot. Salvidrim! 21:28, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Nokis (from Super Mario Sunshine) do not have their own article nor do they appear in any subsections in articles for Mario characters. Is it okay if I just wikilink Nokis to the Super Mario Sunshine article? Acesyksyk09 21:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Development
editAn online mode for the game was omitted because online infrastructures at the time did not allow rapid-speed gaming to a satisfactory level. - Please explain; the article earlier states that LAN plan is possible. The special edition disc also includes digital content that could be transferred to Game Boy Advance title Fire Emblem via Game Link Cable. - Seems to be missing a few words.
Reception
editMario Kart: Double Dash!! has overall been positively received by reviewers and is commercially successful. - Quite a mouthful...The EGM review is not mentioned in the Reception section. It is discouraged to pad the Review table that way.Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has been positively received by reviewers overall - Still too wordy. "Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has been received generally favorable reviews" or similar would be better. The game placed 63rd in Official Nintendo Magazine's 100 greatest Nintendo games of all time. - Move to the start of the paragraph.
Sources
editMarioWiki is certainly not a reliable source. Please find something else.Three dead links, please find replacement sources or update the links.
Images
editThe "Double Dash!!", a special racing boost that is exclusive to this game, and can only be used during multiplayer races. - This sentence is not grammatically correct.

- Oppose - Yeah, there's not really an argument to be made about "it's more correct with exlamation marks!!". The benchmarks for article titles are not meticulous accuracy to branding quirks, it's WP:COMMONNAME and MOS:TM and I don't see any argument that the current title fails any metric of recognizability, disambiguity, representativity or conciseness. Cleanup effort?
editUpon stumbling upon the above article, I reviewed the article, and...It's fallen a long ways since being made a WP:GA in 2012. The article is in rough shape, well below GA standards. There's all sort of unsourced content, trivia, sloppy stuff, etc. I'm going to try to clean it up a bit, but I don't know time I'll end up having. Others may want to jump in as well if its necessary - if someone one put it through a WP:GAR today, it'd fail for sure as is... Sergecross73 msg me 18:24, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Sergecross73:, you are right, the article has aged terribly and nothing was bothered about correcting the errors, which is why it needs its GAR. 2801:1CA:E:1411:BCBF:F879:7471:FE58 (talk) 20:52, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

On 5 March, Sergecross73 tagged this 2012 GA as needing cleanup, noting on the talk page that the article was "well below GA standards" and contained "unsourced content, trivia, sloppy stuff, etc." ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 14:17, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, it's in terrible shape - a victim of a decade plus of people slow degrading it into a worse status. I originally intended on cleaning it up myself, but I've lost interest and am focusing on other projects now, so that cleanup effort probably won't come from me anymore... Sergecross73 msg me 14:26, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Roll back Why not just roll back the article to the last "GA-quality" version? It was fully-sourced at one point before a lot of cruft was added. The only part relevant to the modern day is a Kotaku listicle. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:00, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- I'm open to that if someone wants to present a certain version to revert back to. Not much has happened with this game over the years - it hasn't been re-released, found a cult following, had much in the way of a retrospective commentary, etc. So there's probably not much concern about it being "outdated" if we were to do that. - The article was listed as a GA on 2 May 2012, and the adding of unsourced content began less than ten days afterwards. If rollback is needed, it would have to be to the version promoted to GA, which does not satisfy the current criteria (criterion 2b), for example). ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 16:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, fair, even the GA version is a bit light on sourcing. (Sorry Salv.) Sergecross73 msg me 23:39, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

- I'm open to that if someone wants to present a certain version to revert back to. Not much has happened with this game over the years - it hasn't been re-released, found a cult following, had much in the way of a retrospective commentary, etc. So there's probably not much concern about it being "outdated" if we were to do that. - Went ahead and fixed the gameplay section on a whim, so there's that chunk of work done. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 21:54, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sergecross73 do you think the fix is good enough to keep the GA status? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 13:49, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say so personally. The reception section is still lacking even with the one paragraph I added to it, and I've been too lazy lately to fix it further. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 17:45, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
