Dutch Metal Band?

edit

The first line of this article claims hat The Gathering still is a metal band. But at least If_Then_Else has nothing to do with metal anymore!

This really is a good point, as the band doesnt do metal anymore. This needs to be changed. Ill do some research into the musical charecteristics of their music over the years and what albums go were, so people can decipher the musical curve. Unless someone already knows and wants to share that information. Leyasu 00:29, 15 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
The reference to metal has been already removed. However, some of the article begs a rewrite or a rephrase at least. The paragraph mentioning a sort of relation between gothic metal and Mandylion doesn't make sense in the current context. If someone has figured (or is willing to) out an exact (argumented) progression of their music through the genres, I'd be happy to see it in the article. --Parasti 02:08, 15 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Anneke Guitars?

edit

When on Earth did Anneke start playing guitars? Leyasu 01:49, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at their website, there's plenty of pictures where Anneke plays guitar on-stage, there are bootleg videos with her doing acoustic solo performances. She also sold some of her acoustic guitars earlier this year on eBay. See the discussion on the official forum. And she plays acoustic guitar on Sleepy Buildings. I could go on. -- Parasti 04:15, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough, i missed something along the way then. My apologies. Leyasu 15:51, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

A better way to display the discography

edit

I'm not sure I like the discography section, with its many colors, its pictures, and all the info. I was wondering if there was a better way to display it.

So I went through other band's page to see how the discography is presented. These are the best ones I found:

The gray table style (popular for metal bands)

Megadeth

Slayer

Pantera

The gallery Style

Nightwish

Radiohead

Pink Floyd

The gallery with song info

Led Zeppelin

The Beatles

Other nice styles

Madonna

I noticed that most of them have two sections, one for the studio albums, usualy with full pictures, and a simpler one for the singles.

Im gonna keep researching this a little more but i wanna know your opinion. What do you think would be the best display for TG's discography ?

--Pspoulin 08:23, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

The gallery you put up looks good, nice work. What are the requirements for starting a separate discography page? The one in the original article at the moment seems to take up most of the article. -- Parasti 04:33, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Discog looks good. Keep it on the article. Parasti, cheers for relinking, i meant to get around to doing that. Leyasu 04:41, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

TG's music genre(s)

edit

From Parasti on TG's genres: "Perhaps, but death metal is definitely not one of them. Feel free to educate me in this field on the talk page, if necessary".

I was making a reference to the first 2 albums. Maybe "doom metal" or "gothic metal" would be more appropriate, i don't know. Anyway, "Alt rock" is certainly not enough to define TG since it has changed so much

--Pspoulin 00:29, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree that it's not enough. In fact, "alternative rock" is a mere generalisation in itself in my opinion. On the other hand, this is what they currently are doing, and having all of the genres in the infobox would be somewhat misleading and it would generally take up a lot of space. Basically I find listing all labels different from listing all genres, since labels naturally don't fit the "a little of this, a little of that" statement. Genres, unfortunately, fit well, so it excludes the necessary timeline, making The Gathering a gothic alternative doom rock metal band. That's my reasoning. If you do put something in there, take the genres from album pages, that's the closest we can get. -- Parasti 02:15, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Add the tag of 'Gothic Metal' and then add the tag of (Earlier Works). That is pretty self explanatory when the article is read. Leyasu 02:54, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Always... isn't gothic metal. Doom metal would be more appropriate. It is closer to bands like early Anathema, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride rather than early Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, etc. Lordhong 19:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I would like to disagree. Note that Always... is one of the earliest gothic metal albums, released way back in 1992. As a genre evolves, it moves further away from its influences, and gothic metal is no exception. The difference of the "early" gothic metal from doom metal might not be a very significant one, but it is exactly this tiny difference that makes us uncomfortable lumping it with MDB and early Anathema by calling it doom metal. It's just not it. 80.233.255.7 20:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Article lenght

edit

Wow, I've just noticed that TG's entry on wikipedia is longer than Slayer's, Children of Bodom's, In Flames', Rage Against the Machine's and many more important artists The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pspoulin (talk • contribs) .

I would debate the importance of any of those bands. The Gathering has a longer article, problem? Leyasu 10:11, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't be concerned about length, especially in comparison to articles of other artists. If it bothers you, check out Wikipedia:Article size. Also, if all the deeply poetic stuff is removed, it's not that large at all.
By the way, Slayer has their discog on a separate page. -- Parasti 20:11, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't have a problem with that, quite the contrary. I was just making an observation --Pspoulin 00:07, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Albums sold

edit

Where do these numbers come from? There is no reference link to the source, or any attempt at needing link/citation. Lordhong 19:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Home - 9th studio album

edit

I know it has always been referenced as the 9th studio album, even in press releases, but what is the missing one? Is Sleepy building considered one? I count only 8. Lordhong 19:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Labels

edit

Should distribution labels like The End Records be listed? A few more should added (Scarecrow, Mexican label, for exemple). But in my opinion, only the original labels (Foundation, CM, Psycho) should be listed. Lordhong 19:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Roots and influences

edit

This section was just added. First of all, is it of any relevance? Apart from similarities with a few artists like Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride and very early Gathering albums (ie, Always and Almost a Dance), all the recent work is fairly different then most bands listed. Secondly, the list seems to be purely an opinion and hardly official or referenced (and no, listing the members' favorite albums is hardly a reference: Mozart should then be listed, as he is Anneke's favorite composer).

Some references can be made to some artists: TG has mentioned in interviews and on their official boards, for example, that Slowdive was an influence. But without proper reference, it is too arbitrary and not factual. Lordhong 19:48, 23 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

What's next?

edit

Read no further because this comment is crap.  :) Interestingly enough, there seems to be emerging a trend of naming albums in more and more generic names. See Souvenirs and Home (disambiguation) for examples. 80.233.255.7 01:07, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

gothic rock?

edit

Many people add gothic rock as one of the genres in the box, while other ones toggle it. The last change was labelled so:

"The Gathering have never played gothic rock. It takes no more than 5 minutes listening to The Cure or Bauhaus to know the difference"

But TG music is a mix of various influences, and obviously "gothic rock" should be considered as one of them and not the only genre they played; since some people also use "goth rock" with a wider sense (not only bands of the 80es like Cure or Bauhaus) and some of TG albums have a gloomy mood and dark atmospheres, the question may be focusized in order to obtain a solution, or some other genres in the box should be toggled. Otherwise the edit war will continue. O.o Connacht (talk) 16:41, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
