Proposed move

edit

I propose moving this article to Athletic Ground (Scarborough), which currently redirects here. Normal practice is to use traditional names, where one exists, rather than sponsored ones, e.g. Pride Park Stadium or Almondvale Stadium. The ground was known as the Athletic Ground for the majority of its existence. I think that what has happened here is that the McCain name was a particularly early example of a sponsored ground name, in the UK a least; and in an earlier Wikipedia age, the article was created under the then-current name, when consensus on these cases probably hadn't developed. Given the lack of response, I am going to submit a formal move request on this basis. Jellyman (talk) 21:33, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ground Pictures

edit

Any chance someone could some upload pictures of the ground, when it was at its best?...for example vs Chelsea FA Cup tie 2004, 4th round, glorious day, a full house, national TV there etc? I understand the photographs of it falling to bits, given that it currently (October 2016) is being razed to the ground (for a Lidl), but it's ironic that just when the stadium was a neat complete little arena, the club slipped down the leagues & was liquidated! The new club Scarborough Athletic F.C. is moving to a new ground at Weaponness in 2017, it would be great to see some warm memories of the McCain (Athletic Ground) on here.

The result of the move request was: Moved. There is consensus to move here, and the rationale that "Athletic Ground" was used for the majority of the stadium's existence is a good one. However, just to be clear, it should be noted that the so-called "consensus" at WP:FOOTY does not trump WP:COMMONNAME and other article titling policies, and the fact that a name is a sponsorship title is never a valid reason to reject it on its own. See for example Emirates Stadium and Ricoh Arena.  — Amakuru (talk) 13:08, 28 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

McCain StadiumAthletic Ground (Scarborough) – Football consensus is to use traditional names, where one exists, rather than sponsored ones (e.g. City of Manchester Stadium or Almondvale Stadium). Comment: See WP:FOOTY discussion here, here and here. This, of course, applies only to football; I'm unaware if similar consensus exists elsewhere. Jellyman (talk) 12:51, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll read those later. Would be nice if it applied to American baseball, golfing events, etc. Recently a golf-related RM closed with Los Angeles Open being moved back to its original name. Randy Kryn 13:01, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
