French name??

The article says that "Michele" is a French female name. However, as far as I know, the French name is Michelle, with two l's: see [1]. It is the feminine form of the male name "Michel" (pronounced in french "mee-shell" - exactly like the feminine form). The name "Michele" with one el is more usually, as far as I know, a *male* *Italian* name, and is not pronounced "mee-shell" but rather "mee-keh-leh". As far as I can see, "michele" as a female name pronounced "mee-shell" is an American invention, arguably a spelling mistake, and not a French name. It also appears not a very common mistake: According to [2] in the U.S. there are 635775 Michelles and just 177625 Micheles. Nyh (talk) 12:30, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

This above ^^ is all incorrect as to the French names. The USA is not a reliable arbiter of what is a correct French name. "Michele" is the correct French spelling of the feminine name, and will normally have a grave accent on the first 'e' as in Michèle. Michelle is an incorrect spelling of the French name, and an Anclicization. Michel is the male version of the French female name. when i googled michele the first entry which is a name site confirms that michele with 1 L is a common name reaching 145th most common name in aus during the 60's. seems to have died off lately though. do not know it being french though as all women i know who have it say its hebrew in origin, of course thats OR and not allowed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.91.9.153 (talk) 20:53, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Michèle (with a grave accent on the first e) and Michelle are both french female names and are pronounced the same. See here for a list of articles on fr.wikipedia that start with "Michèle". Michèle Alliot-Marie served as a minister under 2 french presidents. Michele (no diacritics) is an italian male name with a different pronounciation ("ch" is pronounced "k" in italian) Cfmarenostrum (talk) 18:46, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

The article says that Michele is "pronounced as "Mikele". But it is not clear how to pronounce "Mikele". I remember that Murray Walker used to pronounced Michele Alboreto's first name as "Mick-Aye-Lee" but (a) I am not au fait with Wikipedia's pronounciation notation and (b) Murray Walker might have been wrong. -Ashley Pomeroy 10:55, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Pronounciation

The guide given here is completely wrong - the incorrect English pronounciation is indeed Mickaylee, but it's nothing like the correct pronounciation. It should be mee-keh-leh, with the same 'eh' sound for both the last two syllables, like 'ye' at the beginning of 'yellow', or 'ke' at the start of 'kettle' (or mee-care-leh depending on region of Italy), with the emphasis half-way between MEE-KEH-leh and mee-KEH-leh.
