I grew up in the original Midway Plantation. My family and I rented the home from Betty Housin. I grew up from a boy to a man in this home from 1986-1995. This home was actually built in 1843 not 1848. I played in every one of the buildings. I once peeked in a box in the office building and I found hundreds of National Geographic's magazines from the early 1900's. My mother gave me a good beating for touching the contents of any of those buildings. There was a chicken coop behind the carriage house also. There were 3 slave quarters on the property as well. Sir Walter Raleigh Gun Club was directly behind the home. The house sat on 100 acres. We only groomed 3 acres. A gentleman leased the land directly behind the chicken coop. After that After that soy bean field was the old gun club. This property was my stomping grounds. While all other children grew up in housing developments, I grew up in the woods behind this house. My bedroom was up stairs along with my brother Jeff. There was also a large hall and bathroom up there. That area was all ours. Downstairs was a sunroom. It was the room you walked in when you entered the back door. My mother took a lot of pride in decorating and showing our home. The sunroom was where my mother had light colored furniture with lots of potted plants. To the right of the sunroom was the kitchen that was built on long after the turn of the century. The kitchen was huge. My mother was a cleanly woman and she believed in keeping her home immaculate. She didn't have a single historic artifact was out of place. My brother and I would sometimes move one of her displays or turn the back to face out lol. There was a very large tree beside the kitchen house and directly below it was my basketball goal. My mother and father got permission from Mrs. Betty. We called that the snake tree. My father and I shot over 50 large black snakes out of that tree. They black snakes would lay on the tree branches real high up and sun. We would have target practice with them. The school house was rented by my mother and father's good friends Rick and Karen.
