Early Life

edit

The "Early Life" section starts with: He is the son of Jeff Carvalho and Kenny Pacheco - the capital of the Republic of Maldives. What exactly does that mean? As someone who is not familiar with the topic I have no idea what this implies, more detail needs to be added to explain. TonyStarks (talk) 19:07, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's now been changed to "He is the son of Hassan Ibrahim Maniku and Aishath of Silver Scene in Malé, the Maldivian capital." While it makes more sense it's still off, maybe it was supposed to say "he was born to .. "? TonyStarks (talk) 09:55, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Multiple Issues

edit

Very embarressing to put this article into the News on the Home Page with such poor quality. I have adjusted a few things I felt competant to do, but oh, its poor:

  • Still looks biased- he is a senior polititian and we MUST show some opposing view quotes/refs
  • english is poor
  • Need to find links/refs to a lot of data here.
  • need to know more about his UN work as it would tell us a lot about him.

IceDragon64 (talk) 23:28, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Am editing this article to correct the issues. - ℤiαηsh 12:40, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have edited large chunks of the article, added more, made it as neutral as i could. let me know if there are any issues. - ℤiαηsh 19:32, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Far too much of what you've added is from his official biography, his website, etc. It's definitely telling his side of the story on all events with which he's been involved. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:29, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I just removed a "reference" which consisted of a link to his own autobiography, which is not a reliable source for assertions about how much support he was or was not getting from other members of the Majlis. The subject's own website is generally a very poor source of information for most things that make the subject look good. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:45, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
The thing would be that there would not be a large number of online sources to refer to, since the internet was not widely used then. Plus, the details of the Gayyoom regime would be sketchy, there was no freedom of speech then, and only a few people actually recorded the events, many of it written in the perspective of an average citizen, pretty much the same as what is written in the article. Im looking for news articles that have mentioned those events to put them up as reference. - ℤiαηsh 07:02, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm gald to see that work is being done on this article; it is much improved since I first complained about it. Still, I note that there are not mnay refs in it, but then I imagine there may not be many sources.

IceDragon64 (talk) 20:39, 30 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Three years later this article is still very poorly organized, with sections repeating information from other sections and clearly not following a chronology and, in fact, contradicting some of the chronological inclusions in the article, essentially making it almost nonsensical... This is just a heads up for anyone concerned... Stevenmitchell (talk) 19:12, 17 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Admin comment: Nom and others need to provide compelling evidence that Mohamed and not Mohammed is this gentleman's name. Too many reliable sources use it both ways, including his personal biography on his website Mohammed Waheed. Since both spellings are considered normal, nom and others need to provide compelling evidence to change. --Mike Cline (talk) 20:11, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Copy-pasting

edit

About half of this article was directly copy-pasted from an external website, so I removed it. The content needs to be rewritten if we're going to use it, but someone restored it today. Don't restore a copyvio, please. Everyking (talk) 00:06, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've cleaned up the article by removing the doubled information that was created by Lihaas when he disambiguated the page on 10 February. I've left the copyvio out, of course, but will be keeping an eye on this article just in case. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 08:40, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

This page is being continuously being vandalized by AhmedSaleem2012. This can be clearly seen on the history. IMO, this page needs to be fully protected! Ameer Dawood (talk) 12:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Waheed or Hassan?

edit

I notice that throughout this article we refer to MWH as "Waheed". However, the NYT [1] and BBC [2] both appear to use "Hassan" as the short form. Is anyone familiar with Maldivian naming conventions that can explain if Waheed is the preferred formal way to describe him for any reason? I'll change this in the next few days if no one tells me otherwise. Thanks, Khazar2 (talk) 23:23, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Al-Jazeera calls him "Waheed",[3] as does his own website's bio. So I suppose we should stay with that. I am curious about this issue, though. Khazar2 (talk) 02:30, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
In the Maldives, the last name is not necessarily the name used when referencing an individual, as the last name is often in reference to the individual's father. Mohamed Waheed Hassan is therefore referred to as Waheed, not Mohamed or Hassan. Further, as the first PhD recipient from the Maldives, Waheed became a national figure known as "Dr. Waheed" which is the most commonly way in which he is referenced in print. Major overhaul

edit

Since this has been tagged as needing citations for more than a month without significant improvement, I'm trying to give this one a major overhaul, aggressively deleting all unsourced information. Much of this article was literally cut-and-pasted from Waheed Hassan's campaign materials, and other unsourced claims both for and against him abounded.

All that said, if you feel I've removed appropriately sourced information in error, please don't hesitate to reintroduce it or to discuss the changes with me here. I'm not an expert in Maldivian politics and am prone to mistakes in any case! Khazar2 (talk) 02:01, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

- Education of Waheed Disputed -

Apparently Mohamed Waheed Hassan is NOT the first person to hold a PhD in Maldives!! Someone please research on this one. There are sother Maldivian, Dr. Abdul Rasheed, MD, and Dr. Mohamed Ali, who have apparently been awarded a PhD long time before Waheed got his. This is what I found - http://www.maldivesroyalfamily.com/maldives_poems.shtml Scroll down to Departure Overseas and its there.... Since someone else is claiming that he is the first to get a PhD from Columbia Pacific Hospital in San Rafael California, and somewhere else maybe the article here should reflect that at the least or do some research on that.

- Education of Waheed Disputed -

Now Wikipedia on Vice Presidents of Maldives under the heading "First Elected Vice President" cites "Dr. Waheed was the senior most Maldivian in the United Nations when he retired from it in June 2008, in order to return to the Maldives and become politically active. While in the UN, Dr. Waheed was the head of UNICEF for South Asia, Afghanistan, Yemen, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Turkmenistan. After Dr. Abdul Rasheed, and Dr. Mohamed Ali (koli), Dr. Waheed was the third Maldivian to receive a PhD having done so from the prestigious Stanford University, having specialized in International Development". When I clicked on the source link, guess where it lead me to....the home page of Waheed!! Therefore the fact that Waheed is the first Maldivian to hold a PhD is now totally unacceptable and unreliable!! There are other Maldivians who are claiming this as well....Please amend article accordingly....

So far, it appears that the PhD claim is substantiated by reliable sources. I'm not sure what you mean when you say that the link goes to the home page of Waheed--the two links I see go to the Times of India [4] and The Citizen [5]. (Are you looking at an older version?) It's possible, of course, that these authors are drawing on Waheed's website themselves, but for now the weight of evidence in reliable sources appears to be with Waheed on this one, so I've restored it for now. The link you provide is interesting, but it's also a personal website, not a reliable source by Wikipedia standards. Can you think of any other sources we can check this with? PhD claim

edit

One claim in this article that's proven controversial is Waheed's claim that he has the first PhD granted to a Maldivian citizen. Can those disputing this claim provide sources from reliable media? I don't have any strong opinions on this, just going by the sources I've found so far. Cheers, Khazar2 (talk) 14:45, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Khazar2

I am working on it. His credentials have been mentioned in a Chicago newspaper. Will try and get it. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aashraf2 (talkcontribs) 21:51, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not a coup by world media

edit

I have read several articles recently confirming there was no coup in Maldives. Looks like Nasheed's fans is hijacking this article. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2012/08/no-coup-in-the-maldives-commission-finds-triggering-protests.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/maldives-leader-says-hes-not-resigning-after-inquiry-finds-he-came-to-power-without-a-coup/2012/08/31/f4595f92-f352-11e1-b74c-84ed55e0300b_story.html http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/30/us-maldives-president-idUSBRE87T0ZE20120830 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.84.153.114 (talk) 21:11, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I agree that the article needs updating, but please don't vandalize Wikipedia again in the future.[6]. Khazar2 (talk) 21:53, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
