editWhat codswallop! Most motorcycles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were little more than motorised bicycles and take their components and terminology from that of the bicycle fraternity. Whether the term saddle or seat is used seems to relate to the type of seat and the regional usage. It seems from my reading that the term saddle is usually only applied to a "sprung saddle" and seat is applied to the "dual seat/benchseat".
As for seats being attached BEHIND the fuel tank, that is certainly not the case with stepthroughs or scooters. M-72 01:37, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- I concur with the first point (and the second, but haven't done anything about it). I have amended the article accordingly - why not since it isn't cited. AFAIAW, saddle is a generic term originally describing the back of some animals. Cuts of meat from the back of sheep are known as "saddle of lamb", for instance.
