Good call Valenkorps
editCould we possibly give this page seperate entries (put still on this page)on the music from each game. A bit of information on the styles and motifs would be great. Let's see how much data we can get on each album, and maybe if each gets too big, we can give them seperate wikis.
Valenkorps
By all means. I'll start by expanding the scope of the article from not just "compilations" to the music itself. "Compilations" should ideally be a subsection of the Final Fantasy Music article.Zaorish 08:13, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Expanded the intro to set a wider scope for the article. I have to go to bed now but I'll add more as I have time.Zaorish 08:21, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I put in sections for FFVI and the recurring themes
editBecause I'm such a retro nut. Crazyswordsman 04:05, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Hymn of the faith
editAs it stands, the article implies that there's renditions of the Hymn for each of the PCs. My experience from my 6 playthroughs, though, was that each rendition of the Hymn belonged to an aeon -- eg. a low, masculine for Ifrit, a child's (or soprano's) for Bahamut, etc. As it a fact that each character has their own theme music, there should be a line break to remove the implied relation to the Hymn. I went a long and changed it, but if anyone objects, please let me know! -- Bakabaka 19:31, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- The CD does have Yuna's theme, Tidus Theme, etc... but it is not the Hymn of the Fayth. The hymn is called Song of Prayer on the CD and there is one for ech aeon. Renmiri 23:34, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
The Star Onions
editShouldn't the Star Onions be mentioned as well somewhere? --Pinkkeith 21:35, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Prologue, Prelude, and FFX
editOkay, I just want to make sure everybody's clear on the standard definitions of these two recurring themes:
Prelude=Ascending and descending 1-2-3-5 harp part in chords C Major A minor C Major A minor F Major G Major A flat Major B flat Major or their analogues; opening title screen of FFI, FFVII, et al.
Prologue=Chords F Major C Mm7 B flat Major A m7 B flat Major G Mm7 C Mm7 etc.; crossing the bridge in FFI, integrated into the finale track in (probably among others) FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX.
Given all that nonsense, I'd like to dispute the part in the introduction that claims that the Prologue was sampled in an early track on FFX; as I recall it, the Prologue was completely absent from the game and a fragment of the *Prelude* was featured in that track. I assume that this oversight was due merely to an error in terminology (prelude and prologue are fairly similar etymologically, after all -- prelude : Latin "playing before" :: prologue : Greek "speaking before"), which is why I transcribed all that musical business and cited occurences.69.168.161.140 03:50, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
FFII Piece in FFVI
editIt's mentioned in the article that an unsused dungeon theme from FFII appeared in FFVI. Which song is this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Josparke (talk • contribs) 02:46, 11 December 2006 (UTC).
Article Title
editAccording to the Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style, shoudn't the article title still be "Final Fantasy music" instead of the new "Music of Final Fantasy"?
Rewrite indeed
editThe disclaimer is no joke--this article is very poorly written and contains bits of commentary that are neither informative to the topic nor contributive to larger thematic content.
There are also numerous instances of erroneous, unwieldy, and ignorant descriptions and/or references to music practice and terminology.
I must advise a collaboration to rewrite all sections of the article. The section themselves are, currently, still viable headings under which information can be organized. It is the content that is of severe concern.
I would also encourage only those with strong musical background to implement and maintain information pertaining to the study, practice, culture, and art of music or music history. I am not discouraging anyone without such training from contributing at all; these contributions should be kept within your own personal informational capacity and it is not recommended you extend your reach beyond your own personal knowledge and experience. The article as it is looks extremely amateur and, frankly, embarrassing to those of us that take music culture and specifically video game music culture seriously.
This is not intended as offense to anyone. But if other articles pertaining to music can be informative, professional, scholarly, and neutral, there's no reason this one can't be.
I'm open to thoughts and suggestions from anyone. Winterglaive 18:45, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Good Article nomination
editHi there! I'm quick-failing this article's Good Article nomination per quick-fail criterion #3:
The article has any cleanup banners, including but not limited to {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, {{NPOV}}, {{unreferenced}}, etc, or large numbers of {{fact}}, {{clarifyme}}, {{huh}}, or similar tags.
As you can no doubt tell, this article has three such cleanup banners attached to it currently. Once the underlying issues are resolved and the banners are removed, please feel free to re-nominate this article. If you have any questions, please contact me via my talk page. Thanks for your work so far on this article. Cheers! Esrever (talk) 23:13, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
Only one audio sample
editand it's Hymn of the Fayth? I'd think that any of Prelude, Victory Fanfare, or a Chocobo theme would be more representative. —Random832 21:25, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Final Fantasy VI - Techno de Chocobo.ogg
editImage:Final Fantasy VI - Techno de Chocobo.ogg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
FFXII
editPresN, I appreciate the work you've done on this article, but I do think my FFXII bit is/was more appropriate as yours features some very subjective opinions (the review parts) and unverifiable claims. Mine only states facts and useful information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ssoass (talk • contribs) 22:23, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Requested moves
editSee Wikipedia:Requested moves for July 11th, copied here for discussion:
- Music of Final Fantasy I and II → Soundtracks of Final Fantasy I and II, et cetera (III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, Tactics). More accurate name for the content of this group. The articles cover the soundtracks well and thoroughly but have very little discussion of the music within the context of the games as played. SDY (talk) 18:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Note that this page requires some work, but the structure is such that it does discuss the music, and I am not proposing moving these pages.
I do not agree with retaining many of these as Good Articles when their coverage is incomplete. The VIII and IX articles are more thorough and I have less concern there, but the group should be kept together. The articles, while well written and well structured, are really about the soundtracks, not about the bleeps and boops encountered in the actual games. SDY (talk) 18:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
I can see your point actually. Looking through some of the articles the music's discussed entirely in terms of CD releases, for example in the reception section of the FFIV article the soundtrack is described as a "great CD". I know this is just one example, but in general the music is discussed almost entirely in terms of the CD releases rather than just as music or in the context of the game. Wasn't this part of the reason there was the whole 'discography' kerfuffle and the cover art was removed? EvilRedEye (talk) 19:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- As long as the article titles are consistent, I don't care. They can be "Soundtracks of FF#", "FF# Discography", whatever. I think Discography is more accurate, but hey. --PresN (talk) 19:04, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- Discography is also very reasonable. SDY (talk) 19:18, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- Discography is better because Music of Final Fantasy X-2 and Music of Final Fantasy XII (for instance) include singles in addition to albums. Kariteh (talk) 20:55, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- Discography is also very reasonable. SDY (talk) 19:18, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- Discography of Final Fantasy IV or Final Fantasy IV Discography? Not sure what the correct form is. SDY (talk) 21:16, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the current names are best, because there is definitely some general music talk, and I think this could possibly be expanded - rst20xx (talk) 23:54, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- My !vote is that it should stay as it is, and if consensus is against that, it should be "Discography of FF#". However, since most people don't have the FF music pages watchlisted, I'm going to bring it up on the Wp:VG talk page. Kariteh tried a week ago, but I'll copy this discussion in for others to have a jumping off place. --PresN (talk) 02:18, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

- My only concern with leaving them where they are is that, as currently stated, they appear to be very incomplete, and a mass-GAR would be much messier than just moving them to the topic that they currently cover very well. Considering the amount of work PresN has put in getting them through the GA process, I think that would be silly to have them go back through that when they do cover a notable topic with good depth and discussion. SDY (talk) 04:33, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Moved to "Discography of..." --PresN (talk) 17:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's worth noting that these pagemoves have created a whole lot of double redirects. I've corrected all the ones for Discography of Final Fantasy X, but will leave the rest for other users (or bots) to fix. Terraxos (talk) 01:24, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I was going to fix them, but then I decided, hey, I'm not a robot, and they'll be fixed in a few days anyway. Maybe if I get bored at work tomorrow. --PresN (talk) 04:45, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Not that I want to be a pain bringing this up or anything, but now that these pages are Officially Discographies, WP:NFCC requires us to remove all album covers and music excerpts, no exceptions. If we don't do it ourselves, we are basically just crossing our fingers that it'll take the people who uphold NFCC a maximal amount of time to Catch us.
- That, or are we waiting for consensus on the heated debate at NFCC to come to consensus, but this edit clearly shows there won't, and our articles are in the same category. happypal (Talk | contribs) 08:51, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- You can remove the images if you want, but I'm not going to. I fundamentally disagree with the idea that merging multiple articles together requires a massive decrease in the number of images used, and while I know consensus is against me and won't bother arguing or reverting such changes, neither am I going to go out of my way to remove them myself. --PresN (talk) 21:06, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, I Don't want to remove the images, and it's not really what I was proposing, as my stance is the same as yours. I was just bringing up an argument which I thought was important. A few weeks ago, Music Of Final Fantasy III & MoFFXI was srtiped of all images/sound just for these reasons, but I was able to salvage 1 cover, after some discussions at WP:NFC, per notability. If it happens again though, even that won't be a possibility (no images in discographies, not even 1). happypal (Talk | contribs) 23:36, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- Grrr. Well, good to know, thank you. --PresN (talk) 00:37, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Final Fantasy XIV
editA recent addition to this article is information on a group with vague links to Square Enix. I've reverted on the basis that the article is supposedly talking about the Music of Final Fantasy as related to its developer, Square Enix. How does a coverage on a fan composition be included in this article? Are the composers by any chance working with Square Enix? Moreover... Final Fantasy XIV? Uhh....enlighten me... — Blue。 20:55, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Additionally, how are they related to the musical composition of the series? By making their own fan compositions? Which are not endorsed officially by Square Enix? Is there any notable information that can actually warrant their inclusion? — Blue。 21:06, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
First of all, the Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack by VariousMusiK Group is made to be a custom soundtrack that could indeed include some tracks of it in the original soundtrack. We know the Final Fantasy XIV isn't done (or perhaps not even started, nor it's soundtrack), but Ritaso Noboemu, which is currently in the process of entering Square Enix, said that some of those tracks might be included in the original soundtrack. However, that soundtrack is not FAN-made, it is like a real original soundtrack, but called under "custom" for copyright reasons under Square Enix. VariousMusiK Group will be working with Square Enix for video game music and with BBC/CNN Network for TV/Film music, as of January 2009. [[Klokos reply: December 15th, 2008 / 04:18PM -USA, Canada)]]
- And do you have any verifiable and reliable sources to go with this bit of information? Most importantly... official? — Blue。 21:38, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
It's impossible to get official sources, because the process of entering Square Enix takes a while. Will post in future. [['Replied by Klokos, December 15th, 2008 / 04:56PM -USA, Canada timezone.']] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Klokos (talk • contribs) 21:47, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

1989–1994: Famicom era
editWhere's 1987? Nomchan (talk) 14:05, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- It's not real. Actually, it's because the text said 1989 was the year FF1 came out, and I fixed it but not the section header. Thanks! --PresN 16:14, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Hey by the way, I'm sorry to say it but...these articles are outdated: Discography of the Final Fantasy VII series, Discography of Final Fantasy XI, Discography of the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series, List of Final Fantasy compilation albums. They should be updated IMO. I put some links to help with that. Nomchan (talk) 13:17, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, taking care of it. --PresN 16:09, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
GA Review
edit- This review is transcluded from Talk:Music of the Final Fantasy series/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
- It is reasonably well written.
- a (prose): b (MoS):
- Just a couple of prose issues:
Although the discography of the original game only includes soundtrack, best of, and piano albums, beginning in 2005 Square, now named Square Enix, produced a collection of media centered around the game and world of Final Fantasy VII entitled the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. → the middle of the sentence (beginning in 2005...) really gets wordy and tries to mention too much. Adding additional commas I think would turn the sentence into more of a mess. Could this be rewritten so it flows better? The last half of the "Chocobo series" paragraph needs to be rewritten. It seems to drone on. Try to be more concise.Music from the series has also been played in specific Final Fantasy concerts and concert series. After the success of the 20020220 Music from Final Fantasy concert in 2002, a recording of which was produced as an album, the Tour de Japon: Music from Final Fantasy was launched in Japan in 2004, and followed by the Dear Friends -Music from Final Fantasy- tour in the United States that same year, which was originally scheduled to be a single concert but grew into a year-long tour. → Sentence is a little too long. Split into separate sentences.
- Just a couple of prose issues:

- It is factually accurate and verifiable.
- a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
There are too many parts that still remain unsourced. I have tagged all of the ones I saw with {{fact}} tags or with {{unreferencedsection}} (as listing the specific statements here would clog up this page too much). Please source them (for the more seemingly trivial facts, primary sources such as liner notes or information from Square would suffice) or remove them. The vast majority of unreferenced portions lie at the ends of the paragraphs.Making another error-check pass through with WP:REFTOOLS, you have multiple references which are given the same tag description: <ref name="EOT">. I cannot make this change as I don't want to inadvertently switch to the wrong reference. Can you please sort this out? Otherwise, the only other thing I see that needs referencing or removal before I give a thumbs-up here is the Others subsection in which I tagged with {{unreferenced}}. I also thought I tagged the first sentence in the Chocobo series subsection because I don't think the first citation reflects the content in the beginning of that paragraph. - Pass/Fail:
- Normally, I would quick-fail due to the rather large amount of unsourced/unreferenced material, but being that this is a large (55KB) article, I will place on hold instead. The biggest thing that needs to be addressed is the referencing of those statements that need them (hopefully I didn't bork up anything else in the process). MuZemike 21:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- Pass/Fail:
Other stuff that I have noticed in the article and corrected (please use for future reference):
- Consistency in commas in a series. Whether the North American or Oxford style is used, the usage of commas in a series must be consistent. I am assuming that the article is using American English, so commas must be placed before the coordinating conjunction in a series of items.
- For clarity and brevity when giving a chronology, it's usually a good idea to list the release year after the first mention of the title. This lets readers follow the chronology better. It also cuts down on having extra words or sentences describing when the games were released.
- I believe the spelling convention is Super Famicom as opposed to Super Famicon, though I personally have also seen it spelled with an "n".
- Only one citation template should be used (in this case, {{citation}} as opposed to using {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, and {{cite video}}; they should not be mixed and matched.
- If you're going to use citation templates, make sure they are being used in all references (notable exception being multiple references from a book, where specific pages/quotes are taken) to maintain consistency.
- The formatting of the citation templates must be consistent. Also, look at my corrections in the article, more specifically here, to see how authors should be cited in the template. Finally, keep the date formatting consistent throughout, which in this article is YYYY-MM-DD.
- Watch out for overlinking. Even in citations, only wikilink the publisher once; don't link for the rest. A good rule of thumb of linking in the article is once in the lead, once in the infobox, and once in the body.
- Always check the redirects (via the "What links here" link on the left of the page) and make sure they are properly categorized and valid redirects per WP:R (you also may catch a "sleeper" malicious redirect sometimes).
- I don't know if the timelines would get any flak over at WP:FAC, but I don't see a problem with them.
Hopefully the stuff that I listed above should also help in the event this article gets nominated for Featured Article status, which, being a critical Final Fantasy article, surely has the potential. MuZemike 21:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- Alright, thank you very much for doing such an in-depth review, I really appreciate it. It's way more than I would usually get out of a GAN review, and will really help if I push this to FAC. I'll get right on fixing the issues you've raised. --PresN 00:02, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Alright, I think I've gotten them all now! --PresN 20:53, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yep, looks good. Passed. MuZemike 02:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Some minor corrections / inaccuracies
editWhile I was reading I noticed some inaccuracies, I didn't want to correct them since they are claerly explained through surrondings sentences, but I still think rephrasing them would be a good idea.
"Like previous titles, the discography of Final Fantasy V included an arranged and a piano album in addition to the main soundtrack album."
If it was "like the previous title" or "like its predecessor", that would work, but FFI-III don't have a piano collections...
"It was the last Final Fantasy soundtrack that Uematsu was a main composer for, as he resigned from Square Enix in November 2004"
With FFXIV, it now has to be changed! :)
"Final Fantasy XIV, announced at the June 2, 2009, Sony E3 conference, will be primarily composed by Uematsu through his "Smile Please" studio."
Uematsu will be the only one to compose this soundtrack, it was written on Dog Ear's blog: "ノビヨ師匠が一人で全曲担当" and is available here: http://dogearrecords.blog92.fc2.com/blog-date-200906.html (2009.06.04)
Thanks for anyone who wants to change these minor details! :) --BahaFura (talk) 00:38, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing out those problems, I'll get right to them. --PresN 05:07, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
A class assessment
editAfter giving the article a quick read, I feel it is not quite A-class yet.
- My main issue is the prose, which is informative, but needs polishing to improve readability. I made some example edits to the article that I think condenses some lengthy parts and adds variance to reduce tedious reading. Examples to keep in mind are the use of "Final Fantasy", the title and lead clear establish that everything mentioned in the article are related to Final Fantasy. So it is not necessary to say "Final Fantasy games", "Final Fantasy franchise", and "Final Fantasy series" every other sentence. Mixing it "the games", "the franchise", "the series" and even "it" will reduce tedious reading. Some words are going to be mentioned a lot, like "piece", "track", "discography", etc., but still try to mix it up with synonyms and pronouns. If you want more specific details, let me know.
- I know some of the info must have been difficult to source, but I have to question the reliability of some of the references. What makes the following reliable sources?
- Square Sound
- Square Enix Music Online
- Chudah's corner
- NobuoUematsu.com
- Critique Of Games
Other than those things, I have no major complaints. Image usage looks good, I especially like the timelines, and the article looks complete. (Guyinblack25 talk 23:08, 20 August 2009 (UTC))
- I've gone through and removed extraneous "Final Fantasy"s, and you're right, there were a ton. I'll try to go through and clean up the prose some more in addition; the references are going to take some work though. --PresN 01:27, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Its been over two months and with no supports for A-class status, it will stay GA. GamerPro64 (talk) 01:33, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Sales figures
editI'm glad to see Maestro2016 exanding this article, though I agree with Dissident93 that the price information was too much. Actually, though, I've never been very happy with the list of sales numbers here, and even less so now that it's a gigantic table- it's a bit overwhelming. I think it may be better, now that Maesto2016 has found suhc excellent references, to instead add all those sales figures to the individual "Music of Final Fantasy #" articles, and only summarize the highlights here. As it is, the sales tables are about 2/3 as long as the entire (gigantic) history section, and nothing but very precise numbers at that. --PresN 03:00, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Revenue could be re-added if it was presented in a different way, but I don't think we should ever include the price, at least not in the table format. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 03:21, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Do you mean, as in, having separate sales tables for each FF music article, and then reducing the table here down to an overall summary? Maestro2016 (talk) 17:47, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- It appears so. Although I'm not sure what can be summarized with it here. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 19:07, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Probably give the sum totals of all album/single sales for a game/sub-series with links to the respective articles? Maestro2016 (talk) 20:43, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- I've added separate tables for each FF music article, and trimmed the table in this article down to a summary of the sales in those articles. Let me know what you guys think. Maestro2016 (talk) 23:50, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Well, I didn't mean tables, because the individual game articles have sections on each album so they should have the sales there- I can adjust that, though. Just realized as well that the revenue numbers are double-no good: the source doesn't actually say revenue. You're multiplying the sticker price by the total sales numbers, but there's no proof that every album was sold at full price. Third, I'd rather the sales table here be prose that discusses the trends, but the table itself isn't bad at all so I'll poke at it after I adjust the individual game articles. --PresN 04:23, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, a little lost- for "All Sounds of Final Fantasy I - II", you cite the sales numbers to [1] - but that's just a general Oricon url. How are you getting the sales numbers? If it doesn't have its own url, that's fine, but the citation should include instructions for how to search for the album. --PresN 04:27, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, a subscription is required to access the full Oricon sales figures. Maestro2016 (talk) 04:48, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Maestro2016: Okay, so, subscription required, then you have to search for the album name? There's no direct url to the sales numbers for the album name? I'm not going to get a subscription, I'm just going to update the citation to explain what you need to do if there's no direct url to use instead (the subscription is covered by adding |url-access=subscription). --PresN 05:04, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

- Pretty much. Though it would be best to search the Japanese title. You can see the Japanese title for each album/single in the Oricon price references (the "title=" part). Maestro2016 (talk) 10:10, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I've gone through all the child articles and edited them to include the sales figures in the appropriate sections where the source was reliable, instead of a table at the bottom. I did not include revenue numbers; those are WP:SYNTH and almost certainly innacurate- you can't just assume that all of the sales were made at the original list price, much less do things like take the average of the standard and limited edition's list price and multiply by sales. I have not updated this page; I'm still thinking on what to do here. Sales numbers for just the OST for each main-series game? --PresN 02:12, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Theatrhythm
editConsidering the Theatrhythm series focuses on FF music, would it make sense to add it as part of the legacy section? Dyxtan (talk) 17:45, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
