I'd just like to say this is incredibly cool. Thank you Mark! - Mustafaa 00:58, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It was also incredibly cool to research :) Glad you like it! mark 11:08, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'm done, now do Dompo! Two homerooms' worth of speakers, and I thought Laal was obscure. Mark, I changed some single quotes to doubles in the References section, because they were a mix, but now I see that you consistently use singles in the rest of the article. If that's the style you like, then for that final heart-stopping joy of anal-retentive (all right) perfection, you should have it in the refs too. Bishonen | Talk 23:11, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

(laughs out loud) — I almost couldn't resist doing it, but then I realized that A-Rness shouldn't cost me my wikitime, at least not now when I should go to sleep (it's one hour past midnight here). Many thanks Bishonen! I'll review your copyediting closely and I will learn from it. And Dompo will surely come (that's got to be another collaboration with Mustafaa). mark 23:56, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Unicode

edit

I cannot read the last letter of the word for 'yam': . I'm not sure whether this is a problem with my browser, but this is a high unicode designation, and so I would imagine that many others would have difficulty with it.

I've started using template:unicode where I can on other articles, as this helps MSIE6 display unicode properly. However, I tried the template on the 'tone' section, but it didn't do much good. Gareth Hughes 12:27, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It was an error in the unicode entity; I should have used ̀ for the Low tone, I've corrected it. I've also added the unicode template, so it should display correct now. Thanks for pointing it out! mark 12:49, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'm not sure that template:unicode is quite right yet. I'm seeing the stuff inside the template in Code2000 (which doesn't look good to me), and, because of the font change, MSIE6 puts a space between the stuff in the template and the stuff outside of it. Would it work if the entire text of each word went into the template? Gareth Hughes 13:16, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You're right, the space looks ugly and placing the full word in the Unicode template solved that. In Mozilla/Firefox it looks good now; and also in MSIE6, probably because I don't have the Code2000 font. I always work with Firefox; never checked how the article looks in MSIE. Now that I see it, I think that the unicode template should be used in all example sentences containing non-Latin characters (sigh). Or would the ipa template (which accomplishes the same, as far as I know) be better? What's the difference exactly? mark 13:47, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The current wikitext for both template:unicode and template:IPA is:

<span class="Unicode" style="font-family:{{IPA fonts}}; font-family /**/:inherit;">{{{1}}}</span>

This calls template:IPA fonts which lists the fonts in order of preference:

Chrysanthi Unicode, Doulos SIL, Gentium, GentiumAlt, Code2000, TITUS Cyberbit Basic, DejaVu Sans, Bitstream Cyberbit, Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Sans Unicode, Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro, Matrix Unicode

There are problems with this font list. I find that AUMS produces the better text, but it does not have as good a unicode range as some of the fonts. Gareth Hughes 14:47, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. As I take it, the font order for IPA doesn't have to be the same as the font order for Unicode in general — a solution might thus be to use two different font lists. AUMS is very good for IPA in general (its only problem is the wrong positioning of the double articulation ligature, but that's easy to solve). Anyway, I will use the IPA template in this article since it is IPA after all. Do you think it is a good idea to create template:unicode fonts, use the present order there, and adjust the order in template:IPA fonts? mark 22:02, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'm removing the {{todo}} template; note that the history of the to do-list can still be found at /to_do. mark 23:56, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Sound samples

edit

Many thanks to the incredible Alafo for translating this article into French, and to him and his wife for recording sound samples. It's been so great to see this happen! — mark 15:11, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Requests

edit

I'd like to feature this as the daily featured article on the main page. But before I do, I'd like to see this article improved in two ways:

(1) Would it be possible for someone to write a longer introduction to this article? The current four-sentence-single-paragraph intro just isn't long enough.
(2) Would it be possible to get a picture of the language written? Nothing fancy - just make sure it's not a copyvio. Raul654 (talk) 05:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The web page Nafaanra Literacy Beginnings has a very nice picture of a literacy class. That page is CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 licensed, so I don't know if it can be used here. I have contacted the content coordinator of the SPARK project with a request for permission to use the picture. — mark 10:09, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have you heard anything? Raul654 (talk) 03:40, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have received permission to use that picture, but the creator (Carol Jordan) cannot provide us with a higher resolution version. — mark 10:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The picture is fine. Can you expand the intro a bit, to about 3x its current size? Raul654 (talk) 03:57, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Raul, I would try but I'm on a fieldtrip in Ghana right now so it'll have to wait. — mark 10:21, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Precision

edit

This page was recently moved to a name other than the one in the lede, along with the word "language", and the edit summary said it was per people and MOS. What's the relevant MOS here? WP:PRECISION indicates the use of the title without "language", if that is a precise name. -- JHunterJ (talk) 17:00, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

It is per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (languages). --JorisvS (talk) 17:13, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

FAR/WP:URFA/2020

edit

There are quite a few issues with this article that make it a far way off (no pun intended) from meeting the criteria to be a featured article. Mostly its lack of comprehensiveness - the article mentions nothing about the history of the language, very little of the vocabulary, and there is little in the way of orthographic description either. Also, it has but two tenaciously-linked images. As such, consider this a notice of things to work on - Nafanan may have been featured article quality back in 2009 but nowadays compared to articles such as French language or even Medumba language - which is rated as a stub. I hope this article's editors can use this feedback to improve it - but considering there's been little in the way of edits since 2017, I doubt there is any community to speak of. @Stan traynor: It doesn't seem like anyone has addressed your concerns. Do you want to nominate this to FAR? Sometimes an FAR nom encourages editors to address the concerns. Z1720 (talk) 17:39, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
There are also unsourced paragraphs, issues of style ("Perhaps surprisingly"), and incomplete references (such as pages missing). Also some OR. A455bcd9 (talk) 15:15, 19 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
