Should romanization be capitalized like the rest of them? --Jiang 07:37, 1 Jan 2004 (UTC)

No idea. Why are the others capitalized? It would seem proper to leave them lowercase, since it's a romanization from the Nat'l Library in Calcutta, it's not a proper noun (NLC is an adjective). --Xiaopo's Talk 08:23, Jan 1, 2004 (UTC)

The article used the Kannada letter ಱ to illustrate ra, which I have replaced with the Malayalam റ. The reason behind the change is that whilst "ಱ" was used in ಹಳೆಗನ್ನಡ, it is not part of the modern Kannada alphabet, and even native speakers of Kannada would have some difficulty identifying it. The equivalent character, however, still exists in Malayalam (റ) and Tamil (ற). I used the Malayalam റ because spoken Malayalam, unlike most Tamil dialects, actually distinguishes between ര ra and റ ra. -- Arvind 16:18, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is not true. Tamils do distinguish between ര ra and റ ra. Just like some tamils don't carefully articulate some other letters (for example the three ல,ள,ழ), some don't seemt ot sufficiently distinguish the r's. --Aadal 17:05, 24 June 2006 (UTC)AadalReply

I'm putting this here for reference while doing transliterations. If anyone wants to complete this and put it in a live page, that may come in handy.

IAST special characters codes

This is a table of the non standard characters based on Latin letters, that are used in IAST transliteration.

CharacterCapsNon caps Caps codeNon caps code
long aĀāĀā
long eĒēĒē
long iĪīĪī
long oŌōŌō
long uŪūŪū
vowelic / retroflex rṚṛ
vowelic / retroflex lḶḷ
long vowelic rṜṝ
long vowelic lḸḹ
retroflex dḌḍ
retroflex tṬṭ
retroflex nṆṇ
retroflex s / shṢṣ
slurred sibilant, shŚśŚś
velar nasal, gnṄṅ
soft nasal, jnññ
anusvaraṃ
visargaḥ

The characters in the second and third columns will not display properly unless an appropriate unicode font is installed.

The text in the fourth and fifth columns should be copied to the html source to create the character. Imc 21:25, 30 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the vocalic modifier should be "ring below", only the retroflex modifier being dot below. But the difference is almost never visible on screen (but typeset or printed on a good printer, you'll see it). At least this is it, what ISO 15919 says. --Pjacobi 21:43, 2005 May 30 (UTC)
OK, do you have codes for these characters? Imc 18:54, 31 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
They are not available pre-composed. The combining ring below is U+0325, see:
r̥ l̥
which is r̥ l̥

Charts?

edit

Since I've already mistaken the IAST for this system I'm not sure this will fly. But how about charts similar to those found on Eden's Page, etc.? Or is that for yet another page? Is the chart on the page the official one in use? If so, nevermind my comments. I just think it would be useful to have a reference page to look to for trying to standardize a transliteration scheme on WP. Also; is the National Library at Calcutta an older name for this: National_Library_of_India? If so, fix link, if I'm mistaken - pardon my ass-umption! Khiradtalk 14:38, 18 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
