Talk:Nestlé Smarties Book Prize

Dates awarded

edit

Today I was trying to settle a debate with some colleagues about how books get big (is it organic word of mouth vs tastemakers). The smarties book award was interesting/relevant as its awarded by children. I wanted to correlate the awards the Harry Potter books got relatively to when they were reviewed by the big newspapers. It was hard to do that because the wikipedia entry didn't provide the actual dates. I found this website suggesting that the award was awarded in December based on books released up to October. Would this be valuable to include?

One of the most prestigious

edit

What do people think in retrospect about its prestige? and the importance of its article?

Report: Current ratings for WP:Children's literature.

This is part of my longer posting to Talk: Carnegie Medal in Literature. I have posted this much also to the Guardian and Blue Peter talk pages. Those two do not have real articles, only stubs. --P64 (talk) 20:19, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Author and illustrator

edit

Was there any prize but prestige?

In which age categories, if any, were the author and illustrator equally rewarded or recognised? --P64 (talk) 14:49, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reading one book article or author biography today, I noticed that the Booktrust website has been redesigned so that countless(?) links may need update. We provide one dead link to Booktrust in this article.

A single address now returns both "Nestlé Children’s Book Prize 2007", a top page for the 2007 prizes, and "About the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize" which incorporates a complete list of winners. [1]

One other annual top page is available, 2006. --P64 (talk) 21:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Archives

I added that link to the corresponding reference in the article (now [ref name=end]). It refers to the children's book website for more information about the prize and I located archive versions of the children's book website. The first one:

Unfortunately, that 15 Jan archived version (the earliest) does not evidently provide more information about the Nestle Prize. Nor do the next two versions, 31 Jan and 11 Mar (available by "forward arrow" at upper right). --P64 (talk) 20:39, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The former is no longer available at Internet Archive (nor any booktrust.org.uk pages, if i understand correctly). The latter remains available so I added that link to [ref name=end]. --P64 (talk) 00:23, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Winners database

edit

Awards & Winners (awardsandwinners.com)

With reference to our list, this database evidently identifies all Gold winners, all Special winners, and Silver or Bronze runners-up (as "Nominations") except 1996 and 2007. It does not identify Overall winners, pre-1996, or illustrators, or publishers.

Rewrite

edit

Today I rewrote and expanded the first of two paragraphs --now the first three of four paragraphs. Numerous COMMENTS (hidden in the code) indicate how I would do a better job with more information; some may be useful to another editor with access to contemporary data. (Such as a typical About the award, History of the award, or complete list of Previous silver/bronze runners up.)

See the preceding note on Archives. --P64 (talk) 20:39, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
