No on Prop Merge
editNo, I don't think there should be a merge. A rename, possibly, but not a merge. NKHS and GWWHS are two schools that no longer exist- well, not exactly. The building that was NKHS is no longer in used (though it was used as NKMS for a long time). GWWHS became New Kent Elementary School for many years until it underwent the rename to George W. Watkins Elementary School. Later, New Kent Primary School underwent a rename to become New Kent Elementary and they split the grades K-5 between the two elementary schools. A relatively new building was used as New Kent High School for a decade or two until a new NKHS was built (finished in 2008), at which time that building became NKMS. It is all immensely complicated. That's why I wanted to keep this article separate- because the re-use of names makes it very difficult to understand which schools are being referred to. This article is meant to be on the historic schools, while the others are on whichever modern school the name currently means. The two historic schools are grouped together because they are the black and white high schools and were important to desegregation. If anyone can think of a name that better illustrates that this is about the historic schools alone, that would be useful. Ian Burnet (talk) 06:41, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Merge with Green v. County School Board of New Kent County
editA new merge idea - merge this to Green v. County School Board of New Kent County where it would serve as a good background. Some of the content could be moved into the individual school pages (George W. Watkins Elementary School and New Kent High School). Having one article on two schools is an odd thing. - I agree with the proposed merge and I suggest that much of this information could also be put on the pages for New Kent County High School and the George W. Watkins Elementary School, including the National Register of Historic Place information. The history of George W. Watkins Elementary School changing from a high school to an elementary school should be on that page, and the history of NKHS, even if buildings have changed, should be on that page. If it is ever re-purposed, you can always say something like "The historic building once occupied by NKHS is now used as ____." Benuski (talk) 21:41, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. The court case is not a National Historic Landmark and never will be; this is a fundamentally different topic from the court case. A merger to the elementary school would be reasonable, since that school is currently in the landmarked building. Nyttend (talk) 01:30, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- And perhaps make a page titled something like [[New Kent High School (built 19??) for the other building? There should certainly be mention of the Supreme Court case on the page for each building, but they should have separate pages. That makes sense, I retract my support of the merge to the Supreme Court case, but highly support splitting this page. Benuski (talk) 01:53, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Splitting doesn't really work since each school already has their own page. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 02:45, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
