Franz Umbscheiden
editThe article for Franz Umbscheiden, based on Appletons' like much of Oswald Ottendorfer's is, records Umbscheiden as editor 1860-1864, that is during the time that the Ottendorfer article says Ottendorfer was editor. Maybe there was an executive editor/managing editor sort of arrangement? I hesitate to include Umbscheiden in this article until that is clarified. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 23:02, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Wittke just notes he was on the staff, so I will go with that and change the Umbscheiden article as well. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 20:21, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
The paper's official history as presented in the pamphlet An Epitome of the New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung's Sixty-Five Years of Progress (1899) does not mention Umbscheiden. It states that the Staats-Zeitung was "under the editorial management of Mr. Ottendorfer" from 1859 forward. Therefore, the presence of Umbscheiden on the staff seems primarily of political interest, and I have moved the reference to him to the Political Influence section.TMRhistory (talk) 13:09, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Current status?
editThis article makes it appear the paper is still running. It's website http://www.germancorner.com/NYStaatsZ/ does not appear to have received an update since 1997. But Library of Congress records indicate that it has contributed to run in one form or another since, and still does. See:
https://www.loc.gov/item/sn92004468 https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/2002212768/ https://www.loc.gov/item/2002212768
And a 2001 NYT article would seem do indicate a reasonable, if small, circulation, see: https://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/27/nyregion/neighborhood-report-new-york-newspapers-158-years-counting-german-paper-pushes.html
But other than the Library of Congress info, there seems to be no hint of its continued operation. What is its current status, format, etc? Presumably if it continues, it continues to be printed, as the website links appear dead. Though I sincerely hope that to be the case, the business of journalism would seem to render that unlikely. I'd be interested in seeing an up to date extension of this article regarding its current state, or fate. Phifty (talk) 22:28, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
