Flag

edit

@Glasperlenspieler: Please provide evidence to show that the flag with the Hapsburg eagle can be used as the national flag of Austria. This is not mentioned in Flag of Austria, List of Austrian flags or their German equivalent articles. The infobox documentation clearly states that the "flag_year" parameter should only be used for historical elections when an older flag design was in effect, which isn't the case for the current election. Yeah, the flag used should be the main national flag. Using a different one "to avoid confusion with Latvia" isn't a valid reason, particularly when the word "Austrian" is directly above the flag... Number 57 00:56, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am from Austria and we use the eagle flag all the time, for example at our National Day or in football stadiums. The eagle flag is not associated with the Habsburgs, but rather with breaking the chains of servitude and against slavery and oppression. It's the much better flag than the plain one. If you zoom in on this picture here for example, you will clearly see that BOTH versions are used by actual Austrian people. Not just one: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Wien_-_Anti-Corona-Demo%2C_16._J%C3%A4nner_2021.JPG Glasperlenspieler (talk) 04:26, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Glasperlenspieler: That isn't evidence that the Hapsburg eagle flag is a national flag. In a free country people can, and will, fly any flag they like. A national flag is something that's very specific, it's often prescribed in law or even the constitution. You are going against the general consensus which is to use the national flag, as given in country data templates i.e. Template:Country data Austria, in election articles. Template:Infobox election by default incorporates the national flag. You have overridden this just because of your own personal preference and are coming up with poor excuses, such as the confusion with Latvia, to justify your actions.--Obi2canibe (talk) 14:00, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
A) you are writing Habsburg wrong. It's with a "b" and not a "p". And nobody associates the eagle flag with the Habsburg Empire these days. It's about breaking the chains of servitude. And B) you can use both flags, as seen in numerous state/official proceedings in Austria and by the public (demos, sports etc.) Stop being ridiculous. @Glasperlenspieler: I shouldn't have to educate an Austrian about the evolution of one of their national symbols - have a look at this to see the evolution of modern eagle from that used by the Habsburg empire. And to add to the point I made yesterday, Article 8a. (1) of the Constitution says The flag consists of three identically broad horizontal stripes of which the intermediate is white, the upper and the lower are red. No mention of that gloried vulture or any other beast.--Obi2canibe (talk) 16:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
To be fair, the Eagled flag is consistent with other articles on Austrian elections 50.235.136.54 (talk) 22:01, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's because one editor changed them all. Obi2canibe (talk) 19:01, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Results table - short party names (ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ etc.) should remain in the table.

edit

A user objects to this, because "it has always been this way".

But here in Austria, the parties are not referred to by their long names, but rather exclusively by their short names (ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens, NEOS etc.)

It is also the official ballot language, see here:

https://img.diepresse.com/public/incoming/smg7y4-kein-Titel/alternates/FREE_1800/kein%20Titel

https://www.bmi.gv.at/412/Nationalratswahlen/Nationalratswahl_2024/start.aspx#bund

Therefore, it might make sense in other countries to only use the long party name, but not here in Austria.

Keeping only the long party names, because "it has always been this way" is NOT a valid argument. Glasperlenspieler (talk) 05:36, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Glasperlenspieler: This article isn't solely for the benefit of Austrians, it's for everyone in the world. The clear consensus is to use the full WP:COMMONNAME in results table, not necessarily what appears on ballot papers. Do news sources talk about "Karl Nehammer – The People's Party" or "The People's Party" when they're reporting about the election?
Your attitude in this matter, and that above, shows that you're suffering from chronic WP:OWNERSHIP. I made this table, so I decide what's in there and how it is written isn't an attitude that any editor should have, let alone one that's been editing for ten years.--Obi2canibe (talk) 14:36, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
The Austrian news sources usually report just the short names of the parties ... "ÖVP proposes this, FPÖ wants to deport those, the Greens want more solar panels etc." ... something that would go unnoticed if you delete the short versions of the parties from the table. Glasperlenspieler (talk) 14:47, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are two main issues with your various assertions. Firstly, this is English Wikipedia and therefore what German-language sources do is irrelevant. What matters is how English sources refer to the parties. Secondly, you are conflating text in prose with the names of the parties in the results table. The parties' abbreviations are mentioned in the prose already.
The main point here is how to list parties in the results table. All other Austrian legislative election articles list the parties by their usual names; I see no good reason to vary from that position in this instance. Number 57 16:12, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

"First time since World War II"

edit

The election "marked the first time that a far-right party won the most seats in a legislative election in Austria since World War II". This statement is in the article and is well sourced, but is it accurate? The ÖVP won the 1945 Austrian legislative election, but I don't see any evidence they were considered far-right and their leader Leopold Figl was anti-Nazi. Otherwise the preceding election was in 1930. I T B F 📢 03:34, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

WW2 was over in Austria when the 1945 election was held ... what do you mean ? Every election since 1945 was held AFTER WW2 here. In every election since then ÖVP or SPÖ won, until 2024. What do you mean ? Glasperlenspieler (talk) 05:13, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
It implies a far-right party won an election during World War II. I T B F 📢 06:32, 2 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would it help if it were reworded first election in the history of postwar Austria or something like that? Borgenland (talk) 09:33, 2 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
