A correction: Nikita in Russian is not a diminutive of Nikolai. In Russian, Nikita is a completely different name from Nikolai. Thank you.

Female / French

Copied from the talk page for Nikita (Song) since this info also relates here - I have edited to remove the reference to Nikita being of French origin, and clarified its use for a girls' name

I can find no credible evidence anywhere at all that Nikita was in fact a French, or female name, prior to the release of Nikita (song) and La Femme Nikita. My understanding is that the movie never clarifies whether Nikita is a birth name, nickname, etc. Certainly there is a dearth of famous French women in history with this as a given name; I can't find any at all. It appears that the French popularity of the name for girls is only since the movie's 1990 release. Since John's video predates this, was performed by a gay man, and was about a Russian soldier in the early 80s, it seems implausible that it was ever referring to a woman. The websites given referencing Nikita as historically a girl's name have no reliable sources listed, and indeed baby name sites are notorious for rampant copying of other baby name sites' meanings, many of which are fabricated, misleading or just plain incorrect.

In essence it would probably be more accurate to say that "Nikita is a boys' name of Slavic origin, but since the release of Elton John's video Nikita has (erroneously) been given to girls, and has thus become popular as a girls' name, particularly in France following the release of La Femme Nikita." The merge template was missing any discussion or rationale. I'll remove the merge template in a week, because disambiguation pages and articles co-exist and complement each other. Example: See David (disambiguation) vs David (name). I removed the prose from this disambiguation page. The lists go here, and the article gets all the prose. So should we merge prose? Per WP:DAB, No.

Should we merge the lists? Maybe, but if merged, they shouldn't use the same internal order, since they serve different purposes. Here, the film and TV shows have by far the highest combined access rate, and they're searched by first name

I switched to bold subheadings instead of ==headers==. DABs typically don't need a TOC or sections.

In my opinion, this disambiguation page, on the English language Wikipedia, is primarily about single-named fictional Nikitas.

• Do not oppose. I do not oppose, nor support merging. All the names at the end do tie to the Greek name Nikita. I think it would be logical to merge. One question. What Katarina_Waters has anything to do with Nikita? Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 00:20, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
• Do not merge. There are several items (TV series, song, ...) that would not be compatible with an article about the name origin. On the other hand, the name explanation in Nikita (name) should not appear on a dab page per WP:MOSDAB, and I'd hate losing it. Only the two Russian princes seem to be called "Nikita" alone, so rather move all the names to Nikita (name) but leave the dab page and name page separate. – sgeureka ^t•c 07:43, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm boldly salting two things:
1. The dispute over the Nikita (name) national origin has no place here. This is for disambiguation only, so I've removed it, and added a hidden comment instructing not to add national origin here.
2. This is not a WP:Coatrack. The allegation about Nikita being a slang term was unsourced, lacked an article supporting the claim, and falsely asserted that the song article had any relevance. Don't say it did; it didn't. --Lexein (talk) 14:49, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
