GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Notable Aboriginal people of Canada/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Reviewer: Nikkimaria (talk) 17:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC) Hey all, I'll be reviewing this article for possible GA status.Reply

Note: I have not yet reviewed the current lead or "Contributions" section because of concerns detailed below. Once these have been addressed, I will evaluate the accuracy, writing, verifiability and neutrality of those sections.

Writing and formatting

edit
  • As it stands, the lead section reads like the introduction to an essay. It should be rewritten to conform to an encyclopedic tone.

  Not done

  • For an article of this length, the lead should be 3-4 paragraphs.

  Not done

  • The Inuit and First Nations sections should have an introductory sentence before jumping straight into detailed descriptions of people
  Done
  • "She was born in 1801 near a large lake in Newfoundland, at the time the population of the Beothuk was dwindling" - run-on sentence, "large lake" isn't really relevant
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • "Politically aboriginal peoples have become leaders in the public forum such as Aatsista-Mahkan." - grammar
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Should be consistent in referring to him as Aatsista-Mahkan or Running Rabbit
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • "and would later find conflict in 1873" - awkward phrasing
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • There are a number of run-on sentences that should be corrected
  Done ...pls double check this!!!Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:00, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • In the First Nations section, actors should be one paragraph and musicians another
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • There are still some problems with grammar and flow - read through carefully to find awkward or confusing passages
  Done ...pls double check this!!!Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:00, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • The description of Riel should come before Dumont
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:42, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • The section listing sources should be titled "Notes" or "References"
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Accuracy and verifiability

edit
  • For any information that is not NPOV or that might be challenged, the source used should be independent of the person being talked about
  • Ref 2 should list an author
  DoneSriMesh | talk 21:48, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Ref 3 is not a good site to support such a broad statement
This supports the lead which is in the comments above. So this fix should be done when the lead is done - probably at the end of all the fixings. SriMesh | talk 21:50, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • The link provided for Ref 11 doesn't match the information provided in the citation (also, it would be preferable to cite the article directly if possible)
  Done [1]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Ref 18 seems to be broken (although that might just be my connection, but it's not loading)
works for me Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Refs 23 and 24 both go to IMDB, but are formatted differently
Done using the IMDB formatting template shortcut for all four instances
  • Formatting needs to be consistent per WP:CITE
DoneAll references use citation templates cite book or cite web or the IMDB or hockeydb template shortcutsSriMesh | talk 21:03, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Ref 28 needs to be sourced to the original All-Music Guide cite
  Done [2]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • What makes homeoftheleafs.com a reliable source?
Done LOL...replaced with Hockey Hall of fame bio [3]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Ref 38 should credit the Virtual Museum
  Done [4]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Per this page, the publisher for Ref 40 is not Dartmouth College
  Done[5]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Refs 79 and 80 are the same
  Done Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Broad

edit
  • As this article is specifically about notable individuals, most of the information on language is irrelevant (that being said, it should probably go in an article...I'm just not sure which one). The second paragraph of the contributions section can stay, but the section should be renamed to something like "Recognition".
I was thinking the same...just like you i see nowhere to put it..It is there because i am trying to show as a hole Aboriginal contributions are vast in our every day lives.....But i guess as some point i will have to make an article called Aboriginal culture in Canada.
Some of the stuff might fit in List of place names in Canada of Aboriginal origin (or is already there), but for the straight language stuff that wouldn't work. Nikkimaria (talk) 20:36, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
ok   Done.. have moved a shorter version to main aboriginal page...will be moving it again when i make Aboriginal culture in Canada in due time.
  • Per the above, the "See also" section should also be culled
  Done Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality

edit
  • Must maintain a strict encyclopedic tone in order to remain neutral
  Done Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • I would argue that Big Bear was more notable for his association with the Métis than for Belly River
Both are mentioned ...in order that they happened.Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Even with a source, saying that a person is a "role model" of "enormous integrity" is a stretch of NPOV
  Done has just been reworded.Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Need to cite that aboriginals in the arts and entertainment venue are famous and popular
Done - re-worded with a different synonym for notable. Can only say notable so many times.SriMesh | talk 21:36, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Ref 22 does not support the assertion that Cardinal is best known for Corner Gas
Done re-worded His most recently role is portraying character Davis Quinton on the Canadian television series Corner Gas Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • The role of Kiviaq in "several important advances" needs to be cited - the only one mentioned here is the name
  Done [6]Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  Done not sure about this one!!Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Claims of notability must come from independent (third-party) sources
who ?? Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Be very careful with using the phrase "resistance movement" for Riel's activities - it's a controversial term
Done using the term rebellion as the Northwest Rebellion is termed the Rebellion.SriMesh | talk 21:38, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Are there any notable Aboriginal people with negative associations? In order to balance the POV, criticism of individuals (where properly cited) should probably be included. For example, both Dumont and Riel were widely criticized
This is a whole chapter in this book (Aboriginal people and colonizers of Western Canada to 1900 By Sarah Carter page 108) documenting French and English tensions, racial and religious debates, American and Canadian influences, and the settlement of the Last Best West to support the railway with communities, and really is too in depth not suitable for a synopsis of this type of article entitled Notable Aboriginal people of Canada. Perhaps mentioning the various aspects of such a debate on Riel or Dumont can be discussed on their pages in depth but not here. This type of notability is what reverses neutrality and introduces instability and also brings in content which does not conform to NPOV. I guess the fact that Dumont and Riel were criticised does not have to be gone into detail about here either. Just stating that Riel was in two rebellions with the Government of Canada necessarily does imply criticism or there would not have been a war. So therefore, ergo, it is stated - there were two rebellions. IMHO SriMesh | talk 20:31, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Done I feel that there are both notablities noted (negative and positive) as there are Aboriginal People who were known for their rebellions as well as Aboriginal Peoples noted for their music etc. So there already is content both ways.

  • The picture of Norval Morrisseau does not have a fair-use rationale for this article

  • The source link for the Shanawdithit image is dead
Done image gone...dame i really liked this one ..just cant find info.Buzzzsherman (talk) 09:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Corrected image description of "Shanawdithit" to the correct person, Demasduit
Done image was confused as a portrait of Shanawdithit but is a copy of a painting of Demasduit, her aunt. I could have changed the image to the modern statue of Shanawdithit but wouldn't have been a primary source image of the Beothuk people 30 January 2013

needs organization/layout for readability

edit

The mass of blue links and cites and rambling, unorganized mentions makes this a difficult article to even browse, let alone try to read. I don't know whether bulleting each person and their mini-writeup is the way to go, or something like grouping them either geographically or by region or by group........the title bugs me but I gather it's a pan-wiki things.....everybody has personalities....Skookum1 (talk) 15:37, 22 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
