Split proposed
editThe "History" section of this article is suffering from severe growing pains, and specifically WP:RECENTISM. The CFB project generally addresses some of these issues via creation of a History of Oklahoma Sooners football article per Category:History of college football by team norms. - Id say that an attempt at cutting it down should be undertaken before we think about splitting the history section off.--Dcheagle • talk • contribs 19:12, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Both in my view. UW Dawgs (talk) 19:36, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Totally agree, Dcheagle and I have discussed this in the past.UCO2009bluejay (talk) 17:56, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- I will begin cutting down the histroy section in the next week or two, I'll be working with the knowledge that the history section may very well still need to be split off as we our talking about 124 soon to be 125 years of Sooner football.--Dcheagle • talk • contribs 13:30, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- I've copied the existing history section into Draft:History_of_Oklahoma_Sooners_football. Feel free to edit it.UCO2009bluejay (talk) 16:17, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Oklahoma Sooners football
editI check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Oklahoma Sooners football's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Content dispute
editI've found out about this dispute via this report. Miguel Sigala's edits are clearly not universally accepted and would benefit from a discussion. For example, maybe these facts could end up elsewhere in the article and not in the lead section. Dcheagle, UW Dawgs, and UCO2009bluejay, who have reverted your additions, may be able to explain their reasoning further on the talk page as well (and consider if this information, if it is of use for the article, could be incorporated elsewhere) so that we can understand why things are happening the way they are. Quick Facts, stadium capacity
editStadium capacity listed in Quick Facts is incorrect. Current capacity of Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium is 86,112. 75.89.6.115 (talk) 18:22, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- 80,126 is the official seating capacity, 86, 112 is gameday capacity.--Dcheagle • talk • contribs 21:24, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Very long tag
editMichigan's article is longer than Okahoma's? Alabama and Ohio State's articles are shorter. What is in this article that makes it so long? What can be trimmed? According to the tag it is at 45kb of readable bytes. Per Wikipedia:SIZERULE it is in between 40k to 50k bytes which is in between not justifying dividing, and may need dividing.- UCO2009bluejay (talk) 23:47, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- I agree -- it's not needed. When I first came across this article, it was much more verbose and overly detailed, particularly the history section (see here: [1]). And even then, it looks like the tag was misinterpreting total article size for readable prose size -- there's no way there was ever 155kb of readable text on this page. Maybe one could have made the argument a year ago that the page was too long to navigate comfortably, but now I think it's fine. Puhala,ny (talk) 20:28, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
Another possible conference affiliation for OU
editAccording to this article, OU won two conference championships in the [2] Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. UCO2009bluejay (talk) 03:13, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm skeptical -- OU's own website [3] doesn't list these conference championships, they aren't mentioned in Bennie Owen's College Football Hall of Fame profile [4], and I haven't been able to find any other reference to OU ever being in this conference. Too bad they didn't cite a source. Puhala,ny (talk) 19:52, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- @UCO2009bluejay @Puhala,ny The Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association is better known now days as the Southwest Conference. While they were members they won the 1915 and 1918 conference championships. Dcheagle • talk • contribs 10:08, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
- This is all pretty confusing. The Southwest Conference was founded as the Southwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, whereas the source refers to the Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which doesn't seem to ever have been the name of a conference. They could be referring to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which was an existing conference at the time, but Oklahoma was never in it. Going back through the passage, it's definitely possible that the historical society was trying to talk about the Southwest Conference the whole time and was just being redundant (i.e. the two phantom championships refer to the SWC championships of 1915 and 1918). Puhala,ny (talk) 14:04, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Dcheagle:, @Puhala,ny: [[5] This predates the SWC. See Template:1905 Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football standings created by User:MisterCake in 2020.-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 18:48, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
- @UCO2009bluejay: Interesting find -- I stand corrected. The corresponding article lists the members as both conference members and independents, but it seems like OU may have been a part of the association for at least a year or two. The conference championships may be a bridge too far, though. Puhala,ny (talk) 19:52, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Puhala,ny: @UCO2009bluejay: I can't find a single piece of information on the Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and anything I do find is rather vague or massively full of incorrect information, I don't think this conference ever existed. Multiple sources have OU as Independent 1895-1914 when they joined the Southwest Conference as a founding member 1915. Even have Multiple sources that states Texas was an Independent at the time they were supposedly in this conference in 1905. I'm a little suspect on the season standing template cause is completely un-sourced and was moved to its current title from 1905 Southwestern college football independents records. Me thinks MisterCake found some vague information and ran with it with out looking for further more reliable information. I'm going to be messaging them here in bit about the sources they used to justify the template title.--Dcheagle • talk • contribs 23:00, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
