A "limited" Soviet counter-offensive at Stalingrad?

"...Of the 200,000 - 250,000 [German] soldiers encircled, 90,000 survived to be taken prisoner. Only 5,000 lived to return to Germany. The limited scope of the Soviet offensive..."

The flagship German Sixth Army was physically destroyed by the Soviets at Stalingrad in a counter-offensive usually described as massive. 173.210.125.42 (talk) 23:33, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Battle of Kursk

The Battle of Kursk is mentioned twice - once in the lead, and once in the body.

• Even so, the Soviets themselves became over extended, setting up the stages for the German offensives of the Third Battle of Kharkov and the Battle of Kursk. (lead)

• An attack on the German 2nd Army further north threatened to bring about an encirclement; although the German 2nd Army managed to escape, it was forced to retreat and by 5 February troops of the Voronezh Front were approaching Kursk and Kharkov. (body)

The statement in the body does not support the idea that overextension of the Soviet forces 'set the stage for the battle of Kursk'.

I'd like to reword to "...setting the stage for the German offensive of the Third Battle of Kharkov.'

Operation Saturn – Little Saturn, objectives, dates and sizes

"Little Saturn" was nothing more than this.

The article claims that Operation Little Saturn took place 12 December 1942 – 18 February 1943 and was divided into two stages: first stage, start December 1942, and second stage, start January 1943. However, this seems incorrect: checking Wiki article counterpart in Italian, German and Russian, and both Wikipedia's and online maps, there is no second stage. Little Saturn was 16 – 30 December 1942 and it was a operation limited north-west out of Stalingrad area with the sole purpose of disintegrating Italian and Romanian armies, reaching Millerovo and Morozovsk areas and hit Tatsinskaya airfield from which German troops in Stalingrad were resupplied.

This is due to the fact that Little Saturn was a downsized Saturn: Rostov was by no means a Little Saturn goal and would not be achieved until February 1943. The "second stage", which this article attributes to Little Saturn, achieved the objectives of the original Saturn but that happened after Little Saturn ended, because within the short-period time of the latter (two weeks, not two months) it was declared impossible to reach Rostov. The Soviet counteroffensive against Operation Winter Storm occurred during Little Saturn but was not part of the same operation. Lone Internaut (talk) 15:09, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
