Merge?

edit

How does this differ from Free-space optical communication? If the two subjects are not distinct, the two articles have to be merged.--Srleffler (talk) 05:38, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

It is mainly different, free space optical communications is defined by its range normally medium and long range, however Optical Wireless Communications covers any range of applications is the general concept is a wireless communications through optical media. Also all the last year market research reports agree that OWC is the general concept and VLC and FSO are specific range and applications technologies. For example, the report Progress in Optical Wireless Communications – VLC and FSO Practel, Inc. April 16, 2014.[1] Therefore I think that is better to consider OWC as a superior topic that encloses Space optical communications, Free Space optical Communications, Visible Light Communications, Li-Fi and those specific free space fiber aplications.
Don't merge, put OWC above VLC, FSO, Li-FI, etc... -- Joakipedia (talk) 08:42, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I see. Thanks.--Srleffler (talk) 04:17, 14 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK, thank you for your editorial efforts. The only think maybe it is to merge the optical wireless definition and the Optical wireless communication article, as both are related. I would ask this on the corresponding page.--Joakipedia (talk) 08:10, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
The article optical wireless is describing an unrelated technology: a hybrid system using RF wireless and optical over fiber. It clearly can't be merged here. --Srleffler (talk) 02:40, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I clearly see the point of the no merging, but in that case optical wireless should be rewritten and not considered a category at optical communications, as is not clear that is equivalent to optical fiber, free space or optical carrier, it is a sub-system that includes optical fiber end and wireless, more similar to radio-over fiber with wireless last mile access than to a real all optical communications system. Therefore, it's consideration as a optical communications system could be discussed. -- Joakipedia (talk) 15:16, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't have enough information to decide what to do with the Optical wireless article. The article has a reference, establishing usage of the term to describe that technology. I have no idea how widespread that is, or whether there are less ambiguous terms that could be used. It clearly belongs in Category:Optical communications, because the signal is carried over optical fiber. If you want to start a discussion about that article, you should do so at Talk:Optical wireless, however.--Srleffler (talk) 23:51, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
