Early history

edit

There is no mention of Oswiu's formative years spent in exile at the court of the king of Dal Riada (Argyll), or of his first marriage to Rhieinfellt (Raegnmaeld) a British princess of the line of Urien of Rheged.

It needs all sorts of work. It could be twice as long as it is now and still not be comprehensive. Angus McLellan (Talk) 13:29, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The article is self-contradictory with regards to Oswiu's birth. It says he was probably born in 620 when his father was at the height of his power. And yet it is generally accepted, and the article states numerous times, that Aethelfrith was killed in battle in 616. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.61.44.186 (talk) 15:28, 27 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Irish / Scottish

edit

Bede tells us that he learned the Irish language, but the article goes from there to speaking about learning the "Scottish" language. Is this an inexperienced translator's error — Scytland (Old English) = Ireland, not modern Scotland. Martin Turner (talk) 14:22, 29 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Northumbria

edit

As with some other kings of Northumbria, Deira, and Bernicia, appending "of Northumbria" to Oswiu's name results in more confusion than it resolves. First off, Oswiu wasn't unchallenged as King of Northumbria. He was mainly chief of Berncia who made claim over Deira as well, but his authority was challenged by his sub-kings of Deira, including Œthelwald of Deira, who actually recognized Penda of Mercia as his overlord. This is all very confusing and could be resolved just by retitling the article Oswiu, as has been done for other Anglo-Saxon kings whose kingdoms are confusing, such as Æthelwulf, Æthelstan, Edmund I, and Eadred. If there are no objections I'd like to move the page.--Cúchullain t/c 14:33, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Support. I cannot find any other Oswiu on Wikipedia. Dudley Miles (talk) 15:11, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Support. You have a valid point; I encourage you do what you've mentioned when you can. JoshNEWK1998 (talk 20:35, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead and moved the article based on the support here. If anyone does object we can go ahead and start a more formal WP:RM. Dudley Miles and JoshNEWK1998, I've made a similar request at Æthelfrith of Northumbria if you care to weigh in there.--Cúchullain t/c 16:19, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

The text in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History, Book III, Chapter 25 reads as follows: quote … for Oswy, having been instructed and baptized by the Scots, and being very perfectly skilled in their language, thought nothing better than what they taught. … unquote, see Medieval Sourcebook; if nobody objects, I will remove the “Failed verification” shortcut later this week when adding more links. --Jan Hejkrlík (talk) 10:09, 10 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
