Horsefeathers

Horsefeathers. The name Paul must have a Hebrew origin, just like Saul.

Disambiguation pages

edit

I am adding some major people named Paul from disambiguation pages because names like John Paul Jones and Pope John Paul II deserve to be in the list of examples. The “See also” entries for disambiguation pages can stand because there are other non-notable examples on those pages, but I think some entries deserve to be on the Paul page.

If you disagree, please let’s discuss here rather than just reverting the edit. This is directed at Pwimageglow, who reverted my previous addition with the reasoning that disambiguation pages that mention those people were “already listed in 'See Also' section”. First, searching for notables named “____ Paul” led me to this page, so there is a legitimate reason to have them listed. Second, “you can look elsewhere” is a poor reason to decrease information in an article; Wikipedia itself might not even exist today if seminal works like Cyclopædia had said “just read Newton’s Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica” instead of explaining and discussing Force, etc. For more information, visit MOS:SEEALSO, which includes the following lines: "See also" supplies “internal links to related Wikipedia articles.... to enable readers to explore tangentially related topics.”

With respect, you are missing the point. John Paul Jones etc is not a notable person called Paul. That is the whole purpose of the See Also section in Name articles ie to link pages that may be loosely related to the page. No-one would search Paul to find John Paul Jones but if they did the See Also section is rightly there to direct them to the correct disambiguation page for John Paul Jones. Best and standard practice in wiki is always to redirect to the correct page to avoid duplication eg you wouldn't list every Paul on the John Paul Jones page in case someone accidentally went to the John Paul Jones page looking for some other Paul. There's no point whatsoever having duplicate links from the Paul Page to another page - it's a duplication hence the reversion. "Masculine?"

edit

Surely it's a unisex name. For example, famous actress Billie Paul Piper. 2.31.166.214 (talk) 13:07, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Paul is her middle name, not her given name, and it was presumably to honor her father, who is named Paul. There are exceptions to everything, but uses of the name are overwhelmingly masculine. Cf Paula (given name). General Ization Talk 13:10, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
In the USA, given name and middle name are not the same status, but in Canada (for instance) the middle name is also counted as a given name. In the UK, both are given names too. 185.13.50.214 (talk) 09:25, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
