Non-peripheral peripheries
editExcuse me but a periphery is not peripheral and has nothing whatever to do with the peripheries of Greece. In Greek it does not mean on the periphery of Greece. It is simply the term for a region. A region is the territory "around" a point of interest, such as a Roman military camp. We don't have the word in English. Instead we have "region." I don't know who got started with the peripheries or why it was allowed to continue but it is fairly pervasive at this point though wrong. I suppose it would be too much to ask for a correction. Apparently, WP's neologism is being brought into the English language. I suppose an editor speaking Greek as a first language coined it. He couldn't get away from the Greek vocabulary so he decided to bring a little more of it into English. No one knows what the heck it is. The peripheries of Greece? Whew, they sure have complicated stuff over there. If those are the peripheries, what do we use for the mainland of Greece? And so on.Dave (talk) 14:29, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
