Choeropsis liberiensis or Hexaprotodon liberiensis
editWhat one belongs on this article as it mentions both names but not sure what one is the right one — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.196.206.189 (talk) 01:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- Read the article. This is a dispute. Each name has its supporters. The best we can do is list both and describe the arguments for each. Which the article does. --Khajidha (talk) 17:53, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Genus change help
editI need help changing the genus to Choeropsis on the template, since I am unable to do so. Hexaprotodon is simply not valid anymore, according to the ASM. Can someone help me change it? 74.68.117.176 (talk) 02:50, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
The range map (File:Pygmy Hippopotamus range.jpg) doesn't fit the source mentioned in the caption: the area in Côte d'Ivoire should be way larger for instance. A455bcd9 (talk) 20:51, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
- I would have expected the editors would have made use of the monography by Gabriella L. Flacke and Jan Decher (2019). Choeropsis liberiensis (Artiodactyla: Hippopotamidae). Mammalian Species 51(982)100-118. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 12:29, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
- Y'all may want to make use of Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop to have the map updated. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:35, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
Subspecies extinction
edit@Elmidae: Actually, the IUCN lists the species in multiple countries as extant, but "Extinct - Nigeria" and "The subspecies C. l. heslopi (Heslop’s Pygmy Hippopotamus) is known only from the Niger Delta, Nigeria." Since the vast majority of their entries are for species and not subspecies, how much more would we expect? - UtherSRG (talk) 11:13, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- Still sounds like inference to me, frankly. The issue is discussed in the article body at length, with all the attendant complications; drawing a conclusive "extinct" label from that and placing it in the most visible place (the taxobox) seems an overreach. A conservative stance of source interpretation seems best served by not inserting such flat assignments when we can well do without. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 11:40, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- Fair enough. :) - UtherSRG (talk) 11:56, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
