The OEM '8000-series' cards are re-badged 7000 series cards, not Sea Islands GPUs. They should be removed from this article. Little Professor (talk) 19:36, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Also no, we have had re-branded parts listed as part of new series before for several years now if you remove the 7000 series rebrands from the 8000 series article we should remove the HD6350, HD6750, HD7450, HD7470, 7570 & HD7670 as there all OEM rebrands. There's many more that are little more then a rebrand of an older card with a die shrink. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.178.249.241 (talk) 12:17, 9 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sea Islands is mobile-only

edit

A representative of the AMD Graphics Division has confirmed that the Sea Islands GPU family is mobile-only. There are no desktop Sea Islands GPUs. http://www.overclock.net/t/1358209/wccf-amd-confirms-radeon-hd-8000-sea-island-delay-says-hd-7000-series-to-remain-primary-focus/160#post_19245670 -Sakkura (talk) 03:29, 9 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

No they only confirmed that the 7000 series would be there focus for the foreseeable future in other words don't expect new desktop 8000 series components soon but later on. 2 desktop OEM parts have already been confirmed by AMD for the future the HD8570 & HD8670. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.178.249.241 (talk) 12:07, 9 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the HD 8000 series on the desktop has been confirmed, but those are simply OEM rebadges of the HD 7000 series, as explained here. -Sakkura (talk) 16:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

According to the wording in a recent tech news article, Sea Islands apparently refers to the desktop family of "true" 8000-series Radeons (not 7000-series rebadges); Solar System refers to the mobile family of the same, as-yet-unreleased 8000-series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.65.85.227 (talk) 04:13, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Corrections are needed that is not a news article it's a editorial there is a difference. It has the writers opinion instead of sourced fact. In short if AMD calls it 8000 series it's 8000 series only AMD decides not some 3rd party writer. Like others have said AMD has named re-brand OEM cards as part of the new series before there is precedent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.26.183.21 (talk) 23:32, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some of them are not rebrands either like Oland there's no 7000 series part that corresponds to it it's replacing the Turks card but it's very different to the Turks card. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.50.30.133 (talk) 14:29, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

anandtech are the only ones claiming that the 8000 is a rebadge. many others are saying that there are architecture changes. most are more recent as well. Aunva6 (talk) 01:59, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Richland Refers to upcoming APUs, Not GPUs

edit

This article is about the upcoming family of AMD Radeon GPUs, codenamed 'Sea Islands/Solar System', but incorrectly references desktop models ("8xxxD") using the codename 'Richland'.

As explained during AMD's CES 2013 press event on 7 January 2013, Richland is the codename for an upcoming family of APUs and therefore does not belong in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.65.85.227 (talk) 04:26, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

this is correct, however its a substitude name until the official name comes out. Matthew Smith (talk) 20:10, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
while it is a substitute, it is likely to cause confusion. Aunva6 (talk) 02:01, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rename the article to 8000 series

edit

Then you can stop the squabble. As you can have a table for Desktop parts, a table for OEM parts, a table for mobile parts & a table for the APU parts. Personally I think if it was done like that it would be spread out nicer then the older version of the article & it would contain all 8000 series parts so we have easy reference for everyone who is thinking about buying a new card or system. I realise that the other articles are named after there desktop series so we might need to change those as well for uniformity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.50.76.132 (talk) 23:48, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

This makes sense to me. The articles should be renamed "Radeon 4000 series" "Radeon 5000 series" etc instead of having articles based on architecture like Radeon R700, Evergreen (GPU family) etc Little Professor (talk) 17:38, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I also agree and will help unify them. Matthew Smith (talk) 20:17, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Richland (HD 8xxxD) series launch date

edit

The source mentioned for the 19th of March launch date only mentions mobile versions, also this date was yesterday and at least I've heard of no launch? 91.157.36.6 (talk) 14:46, 20 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rebranding

edit

Apparently the Desktop Sea Island parts are going to be HD7000 series for some unknown reason. At least 1 part the HD7790 is already out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.50.30.133 (talk) 15:17, 31 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

The HD 8000 OEM cards are simply rebranded HD 7000 retail parts, though they did add one GPU (with the same architecture) that wasn't in the original HD 7000 lineup. That was later added to the HD 7000 lineup as the 7790 (which sort of breaks the normal naming scheme). The real question is whether their next generation of retail graphics cards are still going to be called HD 8000. That would add additional confusion between the OEM and retail parts. That doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen though. Sakkura (talk) 14:49, 1 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

confusing...

edit

it should be explained what the difference is between HD8xxx and the D, G, M versions. it is very confusing --84.73.15.137 (talk) 10:22, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

The first one is for Desktops they are usually faster but take more electricity to run so there not so good for laptops as laptops have to consider battery life. The M version is for Mobile there lower powered these are much more likely to be in laptops/notebooks. The G version forms part of the Richland APU line. A APU is a fusion product which combines a CPU & A GPU into 1. You'll often find these in laptops as well as they use little power.

I hope it helps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.26.171.190 (talk) 03:26, 22 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rename this article to Radeon HD 9000 Series or Sea Islands (GPU family), and split the table to its own page on the rebrand

edit

It looks like the Radeon HD 8000 series is nothing more than a rebrand of the Radeon HD 7000 series. Sea Islands is apparently going to be the Radeon HD 9000 series according to http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/graphics/display/20130701195901_AMD_May_Unleash_Next_Generation_Radeon_HD_9000_Series_in_October.html , http://wccftech.com/amds-generation-volcanic-islands-gpus-possibly-launching-october-branded-hd-8000-series/ , http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/amd-radeon-hd-9970-and-hd-9950-tipped-for-september-reveal/0117971 , and http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2013/07/01/amd_radeon_hd_9000_to_finally_hit_in_october . Information needed for pairing APU to a discrete graphics card

edit

The AMD APU processor has in-built graphics. However, you can add an additional graphics card and make the two work together(that is to pair them).

For instance is someone buys a desktop PC, with an A6-6400K APU, then they can buy a AMD Radeon HD6450 to 'pair' them.

I would like a table to show recommended pairing :-

http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/dual-graphics#desktop

A-SERIES NAME _______________ APU GRAPHICS BRAND ____________________ RECOMMENDED GRAPHICS CARD PAIRINGS

A10 – 78x0 APUs _______________________ AMD Radeon™ R7______________ AMD Radeon™ R7 250

A10 – 6xx0 Series ___________________ AMD Radeon™ HD 8670D______________ AMD Radeon™ HD 6570, HD 6670
A10 – 7700K A8 – 7600 _________________________AMD Radeon™ R7_____________ AMD Radeon™ R7 240

A8 – 6x00 Series__________________ AMD Radeon™ HD 8570D____________ AMD Radeon™ HD 6570, HD 6670

A6 – 6x00 Series________________ AMD Radeon™ 8470D_________________ AMD Radeon™ HD 6450

(sorry table is messed up, it was a cut and paste from AMD's web site).

-- I also understand, that if you use a install a much faster graphics card then is recommended for pairing (see above table), then the APU's graphic capability becomes inactive. So graphics in the computer are running from the solely fitted graphics card, rather then the jointly with the APU's graphics.

I also would like to know when a APU A6-6400K with HD 6450 Graphics card. Can beat a discrete card working on its own?. Example R7 240, R7 250, R250X etc... Would they beat a APU A6-6400K with Radeon HD6450 Graphic card?

Some mobile 8000 are not available

edit

See

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Radeon_HD_8xxxM_Series

HD 8890M, HD 8930M, HD8950M, HD 8990M were not released.

Some of them comes one year later in R200 mobile Series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.67.67.49 (talk) 12:01, 4 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Vulkan 1.1 only for GCN 1.2 (2nd gen.) or higher

edit

Vulkan 1.1 only for GCN 1.2 (2nd gen.) or higher See Khronos Vulkan product Table. No Vulkan 1.1 for 1st GCN gen.

See https://www.khronos.org/conformance/adopters/conformant-products/vulkan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.90.228.17 (talk) 23:30, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

GCN 1.1 or 1st gen in Khronos are not conformant to Vulkan 1.1. They are only compatible to the Driver with Vulkan 1.0 as a Subset. it is the Same for OpenCL. Only OpenCL 2.x Cards can Do Vulkan 1.1 and that is GCN 1.2 and higher.

See also OpenCL in Khronos See [1]

Nvidia is here better. Kepler and higher can Do Vulkan 1.1. All products of the Last years can Do it and not only half. In OpenCL they are less good with OpenCL 1.2+.
