editThe difficult to find railroad worm is named for the green bioluminescent pattern on the underside of the caterpillar. There is some variation, but the rail & tie pattern is produced by abdominal transverse inter-segment stripes, lateral segment stripes, and leg ('knee') dots. The railroad worm in the Appalachian mountains lights a rich blue-green, somewhat darker than the pale yellow-green of the Appalachian fire-fly.
