A Pole?

He's real name isn't Polish... He was born in Wrocław, but to the end of II WW it has been German city - Breslau. Therefore, this character is German, not Polish... 77.113.85.43 19:41, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

According to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition #10 (Sept 1986), he was born in Breslau, East Germany. So essentially, both answers are correct. I don't know much about the city's history, but presumbaly when the manual was written, it could have been assumed that the character was born in the 1950s or 1960s when the city was part of East Germany. Obviously, with Marvel's "sliding timescale" that poses a slight problem, depending on when the city switched back to Poland and became officially known as Wroclaw. Since the handbook was written 20 years ago, you can just move his age up by 20 years and we can assume that he was born in the 1970s or early 1980s. Ethnically, he was obviously intended to be German and not Polish based on his name. Perhaps the article should be edited to say, "Originally hailing from Breslau, East Germany (modern day Wrocław, Poland), Rattler was given a bionic tail which he uses to create shockwaves and vibrations." and change all references from him being Polish to being German. 207.229.140.148 (talk) 02:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Duh! I just realized something after adding a Fair Use Rationale to the image on this page. He also had an entry in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Master Edition, which was printed after the fall of communism in both East Germany and Poland (the one he was packaged in, #26, would have been from late 1992 or early 1993). Now, I don't happen to have that one handy - it's in my basement, so I won't be getting it today - but, I wonder what that one said? Breslau became part of Poland as Wrocław in 1945 (see Regained Territories). It was never a part of East Germany (DDR as a a state was created only in 1949). Hence Rattler had to have been born before 1945. I will make appropriate changes in the text of the article as we would usually use for real German people of that period. In related news, I have removed the "Fictional Poles" category from Neophyte (comics), as there was not a single basic in the article text to justify it; feel free to comment at its talk. PS. Neophyte spoke German in his first appearance, IIRC. He also had an accent (as far as accents in comics go, anyway). As for Rattler, his birthplace in the Master Edition is stated as "Breslau, Unified Germany (former East Germany)." Hope that helps! Nyssie (talk) 19:24, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

You beat me to it!  :) I just looked that up a moment ago. So, there are two possible conclusions:

1.) There is, or was, a place (city, town, small village, whatever) in the former East Germany named Breslau, and Rattler was born there.

2.) If there never was such a place, then there has been a long-lasting editorial mistake. In this case, we should merely say that he was born in Germany, and leave a footnote to the effect that the information in the Handbooks is inaccurate. 207.229.140.148 (talk) 23:52, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Wrocław was never unified "back" to Germany, at least not in our history (and as far as I know, Marvel tries to stay true to it). There is no other Breslau in Germany (see Breslau (disambiguation) and de:Breslau (Begriffsklärung)). Oh, German reunification occured in 1990 which would make him no older than 17... I have a feeling some writer / editor did not pay attention to their history lessons. PS. OHOTMU image?

The main image looks suspiciously like it comics from the OHOTMU. Since we serve a similar purpose, WikiProject Comics is of the opinion that images from the handbooks cannot be considered fair use. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 01:59, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
