This group is often mistaken with the Red Hand Commando

As far as I knew, REPUBLICAN Sinn Fein did not have offices in West Belfast, whoever wrote this article has gotten confused by Republican Sinn Fein, led by Ruari of Bradaigh, and Provisional Sinn Fein, led by Gerry Adams. Jim-ie 20:02, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rosemary Nelson POV issues

edit

Without joining into the debate about Northern Ireland, I think it is fair to say that it's misleading to describe Rosemary Nelson as a "Catholic human rights solicitor". She is a Catholic who is famous for defending Catholics who killed British soldiers, among others. Although she was killed for her work defending people, which may be a human rights issue, she was not a "human rights solicitor". This misleadingly paints her as 'the good guy' where instead she is a controversial figure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.180.28.40 (talk) 06:06, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I revered your changes, not for neutrality reasons but because "see discussion" isn't really part of the Wiki format. You bring up a good point though; we should find a more neutral term like "lawyer known for defending alleged Loyalist militants" or similar. A more balanced term like that, especially with a good footnote, would be a good refinement to the article. Thanks for pointing that out. MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:27, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rosemary Nelson defended accused PIRA members; not loyalists. Think the term human rights solicitor is correct in that many of the accused PIRA members she defended she did so in an environment in which the UK has suspended most basic legal rights during that time and used rules of evidence that would not be, and were not in the UK proper, tolerated. Agree it should be noted she was not non-partisan in regards to the troubles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.49.186.132 (talk) 01:30, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • She is considered a Human Rights Lawyer by The Guardian [1] (A British Newspaper), A "Human RIghts Attorney" by the US house of Representatives [2], In Human Rights Firsts report[3] it makes reference to the fact that she represented both Protestant and Catholics, the American Bar Association also points out this fact[4], she is described as a Human Rights Lawyer by Six different Human Rights Organisations[5] including Amnesty International and also by Relatives for Justice [6] as well as the National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (US)[7]
    • Other smaller groups referring to her as A Human Rights Lawyer include:
    • Belfast Telegraph Newspaper[8]
    • The Examiner Newspaper[9]
    • The Washington Post Newspaper[10]
    • New York City Bar (Lawyers Assoc)[11]
    • London Evening Standard Newspaper[12]
    • Boston Globe Newspaper[13]
    • Democracy Now! organisation[14]
    • Socialist Action Party[15]
    • An Phoblacht Newspaper[16]
    • British based Troops Out Movement[17]
    • Defending Women - Defending Rights organisation[18]

Now to suggest she wasn't a human rigths lawyer is ridiculous and she represented people from both sides of the community.--86.44.33.51 (talk) 14:54, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
