Who was Hale?
editA couple of pieces of evidence point to the full name Herbert Robert Hale.
The London Gazette shows Hale, Herbert Robert (deceased) with one address 63 Old Brompton Road. That was the company address from about 1945 to 1975.
The other is a Google snippet from 1937, Newspaper World and Advertising Review, Issues 2060-2085 at p. 37, giving a director's name as Herbert R. Hale. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:17, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Ah, and Herbert Robert Hale was a director of Hutchinson's Australian subsidiary in 1933: The Argus (Melbourne) Friday 8 December 1933. Hardly any room for doubt. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:23, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Date of birth? [1] says 1889 to 1956, while [2] from the external links says he died at age 68 (which would be right for 1889 to 1957). Neither is compatible with a Herbert Robert Hale[3] who was a World War I pilot, born 1885 (that page has some family details). Charles Matthews (talk) 19:32, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Now, Dorothy Mary (Lendrum) 1901 - m (1928) Herbert R Hale. 1888 - 1956 according to [4]; and another Google snippet from [5] p. 258 ties "Lendrum (or Hale), Dorothy Mary" to 71 Gordon Mansions, Torrington Place, London, WC1. Which is the other address in the London Gazette source. So that is helpfully consistent with some things. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:42, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
And here is John Alexander Hale on prabook, confirming parents' names: [6]. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:46, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
So the father-in-law John Lendrum (dates 1867 to 1946 confirmed by Aberdeen University Review, Volumes 31-32, p. 69) was from Ballater. He spent some time at Nagpur, and one child at least was born there in 1895. Herbert Robert Hale would have been about 40 when he married in 1928, Dorothy about 27. John Alexander Hale was born in 1930. (There was a younger son, David Hale, a printer).[7] Nothing too odd, and Hale made his move about seven years later. Charles Matthews (talk) 20:05, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- From what I can see, The Bookseller of March 1919, page 89, states that "Herbert Robert Hale, Royal Air Force, has just been demobilised, and has resumed his position as head of the counting house of John Long, Ltd." Looks like the Imperial War Museum might have a record.[8]. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:17, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
Death
editGRO Sep 1956
HALE Herbert R. 68 Chanctonbury 5h 420
The Robert in that quarter was 23 y.o. so clearly not that, and the only other 68 year old HALE death in the quarter is a female. That aligns with your approximate birth, so it looks correct, but let me get some other records for you.
@Charles Matthews: I am adding some obituary information to our shared Trello account. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:53, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I have had a moment to consult Trello, and have used the obituary in the article. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:37, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
Birth
edit- FreeBMD
Name: Herbert Robert Hale
Registration Year: 1887, Dec Q
Registration district: Norwich 4b, 128
Name of the company
editI have six collections of short stories by Michael Gilbert published by Robert Hale. None of the six use the phrase "Robert Hale and Company" anywhere in or on them. On the spine, and cover, they all say "Hale". Then inside, on the title page, "Robert Hale . London". And on the copyright page "Robert Hale Limited".
So shouldn't the name of this article be changed? Hayford Peirce (talk) 22:30, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
I will change the name of this article to Robert Hale unless I hear objections
editNo one has replied to my earlier comment that Robert Hale and Company does not seem to be the correct name. I proposing changing (moving) the article to Robert Hale (Publishers). Hayford Peirce (talk) 20:17, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
The Crowood Press/JA Allen
editDo we create a new article for The Crowood Press? There are already over 500 wiki articles citing books published by The Crowood Press. Do we rename this article and subsume Hale into Crowood? Or do we create a separate article?
I came upon this wiki article when I was researching publisher Joseph A. Allen,[1] now the imprint J.A. Allen/JA Allen. I have been citing numerous JA Allen books and always wondered why there was no article for it. Found it as a Robert Hale imprint, now belonging to The Crowood Press.
