Sebastiao Gomes Rangel - the death at Motael

edit

I think it appropriate to start a page that links, perhaps from the name "Sebastiao Gomes" in the Dili Massacre article, and deals with the events on that evening. Or, it could come under an earlier heading called "Lead up to the massacre" into which the paragraph on the Portuguese delegation should be inserted.

I don't yet know how to do this. Please offer some advice, or make the changes, and I can contribute. I have limited access to the net, and am a beginner.

That night at Motael was rather dramatic, and an accurate account puts the wider matters into better perspective. There were East Timorese who declined to attend the memorial Mass for Sebastiao Gomes because they believed that the memorial should have included a second East Timorese man who died there earlier in the evening. The players were the present Bishop of Dili, Governor Mario Carrascalao, Bishop Belo, the clandestine youth and the usual Indonesian youth groups, military, and police. Gomes was not shot inside the church, as most reports claim. JoniAlcinoSoares 11:47, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

No discussion for a year! When is someone going to sort out the known facts about the Motael killings and the Santa Cruz massacre? Can't rely just on the existing East Timorese sources, most of them being somewhat unreliable. JoniAlcinoSoares (talk) 15:12, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Referencing problems

edit

References like "Krieger, p. 257." and "Alatas, p. 53." are not any use because they do not actually identify the source. Without the full name of the author and book such a reference is useless. One could just put "Claus, p. 329." and no one would know whether they were referring to a comment by Santa Claus. Djapa Owen (talk) 08:51, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

You might find the full reference/s listed in Indonesian Occupation of East Timor. cheers --Merbabu (talk) 09:52, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Then surely the referenced part of the biblography needs to be copied over to this article, or the ten (by my quick count) abbreviated references completed here. Joe public will never find them there. Djapa Owen (talk) 14:16, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah why not? There will always be ways to improve Wikipedia. --Merbabu (talk) 00:01, 7 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect claim about the USA cutting off support.

edit

The USA continued to support and arm Indonesia in the wake of the Massacre and condemnation. F-16s sold in 1995: https://www.democracynow.org/1997/11/12/massacre_the_story_of_east_timor - the cut off in 1999 seems to be in the wake of the Independence vote and subsequent backlash and then the INTERFET mission.
