Dates of acquisition of subsidiaries?
editDates of acquisition of subsidiaries, and who their owners were, as with Seaspan International, should be given; third-party sources may provide the only answer as WMG's own site says nothing. In some cases, including Seaspan Int'l, the long history of the company before this holding company bought it up implies there should be a separate article for it.Skookum1 (talk) 22:28, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Clarification required
edit- Since when does Seaspan Ferries Corporation compete with BC Ferries between the mainland and Vancouver Island?
- Where would Seaspan Ferries Corporation load railroad cars on the mainland? This would omly be possible somewhere on the bank of Burrard Inlet or somewhere in the Roberts Bank Superport. And where on Vancouver Island? There it would only be possible on the bamk of Departure Bay near Port Way and Grace Street, south of the Nanaimo - Gabriola Island ferry slip. - At Sidney, I think, there are; or Brentwood maybe? I hadn't noticed these details in the article, and just got this; I'll mull it over....what i would like this article to have is the long history of Seaspan before WMG bought it out...there used to be, of course, the CP rail docks in Coal Harbour, which went to corresponding rail docks in Nanaimo and Victoria; I rode the older passenger ferry a few times, it berthed right in downtown Nanaimo as I recall (apparently I'd been on the Vancouver-victoria overnight run when i was a baby, but don't remember it of course).Skookum1 (talk) 02:40, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
The Map of Victoria Harbour shows no possibilety of unloading/loading of railroad cars though the E&N crosses the harbour at the Johnston Street Bridge. Pan the map to Brentwood Bay, Mill Bay and Swartz Bay in turn and you'll find NO railway tracks at any one of those three locations. You'll be able to pan the map and follow the E&N all the way from Victoria to Nanaimo. There used to be a spur to the coast somewhere south or north of Duncan, but the current map no longer shows it. The map clearly shows the spur to the Nanaimo waterfront. Use the maps map #1 and/or Map #2 PS I lived in Victoria from 1952 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1962 as well as in Vancouver from 1962 to 1967. The last time that I travelled on the ferry between the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal/Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal was in November 1989. Neither terminal has provisions for railroad cars. That map is a tourism-based ones and does not show infrastructure - try here and zoom in on Victoria, you'll see rail lines in the upper harbour, above the Bay St Bridge - I know I've seen barges in those waters; other than that there are rail docks at Esquimalt Harbour but those are all military, think. The spur line you mention may have been to the old concrete plant at Bamberton. As for the mainland, there are scads of industrial docks upriver from Roberts Bank, and Seaspan barges are a common site on teh Fraser around New West, the Surrey Docks, around Annacis Island and there are also rail docks on the North Arm of the Fraser within Vancouver....on the North Shore Neptune Terminals has rail docks and there's some out towards Dollarton/2nd Narrows too; some around Port Moody also. As for the claim they compete with BC Ferries, they may mean freight traffic but that's a specious claim as BC Ferries is primarily a passenger/highway adjunct, not a freight service as such. - The maps that I used are Google mapa based on reasonabbly recent aereal photos and as such would show what is still exists. The spur that I was thinking off went to a pulp and paper mill near Cowichan Bay on tide water, if my memory serves me right. When was your map last updated? To the best of my knowkedge the CN line thru Sooke and along the west side of Shawnigan Lake has long since been abandoned. The current descendents of the E&N are the onlt active RRs on Vancouver Island. When you say barges, you mean car floats? Peter Horn User talk 02:24, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

- It's not my map, it's the Provincial Basemap and linked through Geomatics BC into BCGNIS, the provincial gazette, the land titles branch etc. The cross-hatch rail track shows only on certain scales; sure enough zoom in and it shows only a black line for the Galloping Goose Trail but it still shows railyards just south of the Selkirk Trestle; I also know there's a rail overpass just on the west side of the Johnston St Bridge, and SFAIR there are still tracks on the bridge itself which lead a short distance north on the east side, or did not long ago (last I was there was three years ago but not in that area, my memories are from the '90s). Still, I can't see a big Seaspan barge fitting through the Johnston Street Bridge's span at all (that's a small barge in that picture, some are way bigger). YOu should probably take this to Talk:Greater Victoria or Talk:Victoria, British Columbia; there's a few wiki editors in Victoria, can't remebmer who just now. BW there was lots of rail history on the Island - but most of it logging railways; there was never much reason to interlink the continental infrastructure to the Island's.Skookum1 (talk) 05:51, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

- Of course, Google Earth shows the E&N cross the harbour on a seperate span of the Johnson Street Bridge, that's no news to me but you may be right in that there still may be one track along Harbour Road north of the Bay Street Bridge. A closer look at "Satelite" and "Hybrid" modes of the satelite photos and a maximun zoom in appear to warrant that conclusion. However, CN's rail yard is no longer there. I'll take you up on your sugestion and put a posting on the Talk:Greater Victoria and/or Talk:Victoria, British Columbia pages. One thing is reasonably sure, some one operates a car float from the Main Land to the Island, but who and from where to where. When I said "your map" I meant, of course, rhe map that you proposed. Where on mainland: rail slips, and more
editYou (Peter Horn) may find a lot of this interesting to the question at hand; it's even more interesting to those of us who don't know how so many public assets slipped into private hands lately, without anyone telling us or having a mandate to do so....here. What I've never heard before is that Rail America had the Port Alberni-Nanaimo line, how'd that happen? And there's no record of a bidding process on SRBC/WMG (now Seaspan) taking over the E&N. Lots of campaign donations, there's records of those, though....note my comments about the sudden renaming of this company to that of its most prominent BC subsidiary as a political maneouvre, given the same company's participation in Liberal Party campaign backing/organization/connections...if you were from here of late, you'd know that name Ken Dobell, and also David McLean, you probably know who Paul Tellier is....Skookum1 (talk) 11:55, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
- I remember Paul Tellier as chief of the CN. As for my question about where the ferry slips would be, I found my answer at Southern Railway of Vancouver Island#Island Corridor Foundation. Seaspan Marine Corporation -> Seaspan ULC - Seaspan Marine Corporation is no longer the correct name of the company, therefore the name of the page should be changed to Seaspan ULC.[1]
