Title of article

Ardenn moved this article with this ES: "moved Sierra Club of/du Canada to Sierra Club of Canada: English name for English Wikipedia". I agree with using English names, as opposed to something like "München" for Munich. There are instances, however, in which a non-English name has a different status, such as Afrika Korps. (English "Africa Corps" is a redirect.) Similarly, "Doctors Without Borders" redirects to the article at Médecins Sans Frontières, because that's how the organization is actually known to most English speakers.

In this instance, I receive frequent emails from the Sierra Club that refer to the Canadian entity. They always refer to it as "Sierra Club of/du Canada". The website displays a logo with that name, even though the text uses the shortened form without the "du", for the convenience of English speakers. I think the organization's correct name is neither the English "Sierra Club of Canada" nor the French "Sierra Club du Canada", but the hybrid version. The organization's decision is to include both prepositions in its name, so I think the article should be at its original title. JamesMLane t c 22:32, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Before I changed it, 99% of the links went to Sierra Club of Canada, and not Sierra Club of/du Canada. It has nothing to do with the legal name or how they use it, but how an average Canadian uses it. The media all refer to it as Sierra Club of Canada. So in this case, I refute your claim that most English speaking Canadians refer to it as that, because they simply do not. Ardenn 22:37, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

If you go to the main article and click on "What links here", I had to disambiguate an entire 2 articles to have it direct here instead of the previous title, and that was from a disambiguation page. That is how people on Wikipedia are using the title. Ardenn 22:46, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

You are correct to the extent that, having created the article, I should have been more diligent about policing the links to it, because some Wikipedians (though not 99%) have indeed linked to the wrong name. I had better things to do, though -- and still do. Therefore I'm not going to bother about it. I will, however, make sure that the organization's actual, correct, official name is used where important, in this article and in the link from the Sierra Club article. It's the organization's choice to use a hybrid name. That choice, which reflect's the organization's response to the language situation in Canada, is a notable fact about the organization, which shouldn't be obscured. In a case like French Foreign Legion, where an entity is indeed better known to English speakers by its English name, we provide both versions of the name, but I don't think that's necessary here; the English name is contained within the correct name. Youth-led organization?

SCC has a nine-member Board of Directors, on which two seats are reserved for young people. That doesn't seem to me to make SCC a "youth-led organization". Is there some other basis for adding that category to the article? JamesMLane t c 19:14, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
