Just wanted to get everyone's attention. Help out with the damn article!! Also: Should this article still be considered a stub? Eric 21:25, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alright guys, I've removed the stub notifier, the article has been extended and in most cases now has more information than any other school in the area. =) Eric

Uh, you sure about most of this "information" being correct? 69.233.92.130 18:08, 21 December 2006 (UTC) Yes. Everything on this page is accurate.Reply

Cannon Controversy

edit

Since the PI article was published and it received wide spread attention this article has been inundated with vandalism and ill-informed edits. The PI article was written with an obvious slant, which had the unfortunate effect of portraying the city of Snohomish as a backwards community of crazed football fanatics in the minds of it's readers. While I believe the incident is of at least marginal encyclopedic importance and has a rightful place on this page I also believe that what is written on the SHS page should be kept neutral.

The reality of the incident in my own personal experience is as follows:

At the game people were not immediately aware that there had been an accident. From my vantage point in the stands approximately 40 meters from where the cannon crew was you could not tell the full extent of Brett's injuries, and the rest of the crew was still standing, and after being briefly checked by the on-hand paramedics were allowed to leave. During every game there is an ambulance parked near the end of the football field. This ambulance was less than 30 meters from the cannon crew, and was able to respond immediately. The statement from an anonymous ROTC parent, "If this had happened to a football player, you can be sure he would have been airlifted to Harborview," is of little merit. The ambulance was already nearby with paramedics on hand, and Brett's condition was tragic but not life threatening. Shortly after the accident several faculty members came on field to analyze the situation.

The accident happened on a friday and on the following monday there were of course rumors going around the school. Some people thought that the cannon had been overloaded to make a larger blast for homecoming, others thought that the cannon had sounded differently earlier in the day when it was fired for an annual parade. However I never heard anyone level an accusation at Brett for any personal fault. That same monday though the school principal made an announcement stating that an investigation into the cause of the incident would take place, and that as of then no definite cause had been narrowed down.

The response of the school was one of concern for Brett's safety, not a retaliatory response against Brett. Students expressed genuine concern, and while his condition was not a daily topic any news of change in his condition was quickly spread. The school organized an event for students to make get well cards for Brett, and as stated in the PI article he attended the school's Veteran's day assembly.

All this being said in a week or so when all the hype will have died down and most of the people who read the PI article will have forgotten about it, those people who have actual knowledge of the incident and are able to look at it from a neutral perspective will be able to restore this wiki entry. Agreed, Also the article fails to mention that the "cannon controversy" made CNN Headline News the next day. I believe CNN had much more to do with the publicity nationaly/internationaly than any forum could have. While this may have been "huge" localy, this is not an isolated happening. Several years ago at Camp Merriweather, south of Tillamook Oregon, a boy scout was fataly injured when a cannon suffered a misfire and exploded. The whole opening paragraph is poorly worded. I believe that the bullet "Persons familiar with the design of black powder armaments..." should be removed since the knowledge of supposed experts is used as fact, when indeed anyone can log on a forum and say "I'm an expert." If anyone agrees ill change it. Kyanite 08:41, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not sure if anyone saw this, but on December 21 the SHS website front page was updated with a letter from the school board pretaining to the controversy surrounding the cannon. http://shs.sno.wednet.edu/ Kyanite 08:53, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's mentioned in the article. See the last paragraph of the cannon controversy section. --Mwalimu59 14:40, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thanks. I failed to see it since I was blindly looking for mention of its release via the website. Kyanite 08:14, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

On the grounds that the section "cannon controversy" lacks any real value to the Snohomish high school page, I will remove it on this date January 2 2007. 71.113.22.200 03:59, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The whole 'Cannon controversy' was online. Life in Snohomish goes on unphased, aside from a few discussions based around the novelty and interesting social mechanics involved in the article's publicity. There was little or no talk of this at the school, and combined with the exaggerated language of the PI article it would seem to be that the entire 'Cannon controversy' is not related to the school, but to the article. Therefore the controversy should have it's own wikipedia entry, however there isn't enough content in the section, nor is it of sufficient importance to merit it's own entry. So now the section has been compressed and added to the Cannon Crew section under Clubs&Activites, with a link to the article. (PsychoSmith 01:55, 3 January 2007 (UTC))Reply

Actually, PsychoSmith, at least one person has been arrested for threatening the boy who was hurt, telling them that bad things would happen to him if he cooperated with the investigation. And there are doubtless more people who did the same thing.

You aren't, by any chance, someone who wants the cannon tradition alive at all costs, are you? FrankNiddy 19:22, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't recall asserting that he had been threatened. It's just that the comments of a few people were blown out of proportion to represent the entire population of Snohomish. My point isn't that threats weren't made against him, it's that those threatening him make up a very small group of people, and in order to support a neutral perspective these views shouldn't be applied to everyone. As far as the cannon goes it's disappointing that it may not be around any longer, and with proper safety precautions it is an exciting part of school events. But it won't really affect me after this year regardless. (PsychoSmith 00:42, 30 January 2007 (UTC))Reply

Yeah, well it looks like removing it was a good choice. No one is complain too much and the page looks nicer. Maybe we can concentrate on more important things now.

Notable?

edit

Does Snohomish High School really warrant its own article? Heck, even the notable alumni could all fit in to the town of Snohomish notable residents section.

Full disclosure, I went to Snohomish High. 97.113.74.232 (talk) 04:29, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
