Re: 3-way merge proposal

edit

Merge Psychological identity into Identity (social science) since the former is a stub that falls under the latter. Keep these distinct from Personal identity, which has an entirely different set of arguments. Possibly rename the philosophical notion to Personal identity (philosophy) to avoid confusion. Have done everything except merge psych. identity with ID (SS), which seems worth mulling over a bit more. { Ben S. Nelson } Lucidish 00:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Who or what forms 'our' identity? Mother, father or even dog. Its a number of processes that allow a identity to structure. 05:47, 23 April 2006 194.81.33.39 (Talk)

Sadly this has a direct quote from [answers.com][1]. I am currently working on wikifying this article.

Is there a separate page for anthropological concepts of identity? Would it be fair to start one? The section on anthropology and identity in this article is not working. Eli.pousson (talk) 21:34, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replace psychology as a field of "speculation" under Implications with "study". Psychologists discourage speculation - we seek evidence rather than speculate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jilldavidson53 (talkcontribs) 15:58, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

NEED "USE IN SOCIOLOGY" SECTION!!!

edit

There is a bit of mention of sociology in the page currently, but it's wholly inadequate. Identity is a concept used in sociology even more than in psychology or anthropology, and most of the theoretical, conceptual, and significant empirical foci are missing completely. When I have time, I'll compose text for it (or edit what someone else adds, if needed).

If anyone is fluent in the sociology of identity, please feel free to insert a major section on it here! It's very much needed! I just don't have time to write it right now.

need to be totally rewritten

edit

this is a totally biased one sided observation of identity. a lot of conjecture, poor sentence structure, incomplete sentence and few citationsMgdyason (talk) 15:25, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mgdyason. I'm glad you want to improve this article but could you please offer some specific constructive points where you think there could be improvement? Making generic claims and inserting your own commentary within the article does not help us to improve it. I advise you use the talk page to discuss any specific issues you have with this article. WJ94 (talk) 16:19, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

User:WJ94 all of the article is bad as i showed in my edits. if you had of read my edits before you reverted them then you would have seen my corrections. First, identity, as you may be aware, is a topic in many areas. however, this topic, attributed here, is not solely a topic of the social sciences and i'd like the references that indicates that it is. i will check the sources of this entry's main page to find the answer even though i will need to sort through all the junk on offer. Identity, as it is discussed here, is also found in the Arts and Humanities so, as it stands this heading renders this topic incomplete and therefore not encyclopedic. Remove or delete the whole page! Further, you reverted my edits without consensus and are therefore in violation of Wikipedia's policy. Revert them back to as i left it, i will edit in a neutral point of view as you suggest elsewhere. alternatively, i may have to read the Arbitration policy to identify what can be done about the misinformation offered as fact regards this topic. i am not going to re-write the whole article in the talk section, as my time is limited. i think, i only edited one section and gave up because it was causing my head to ache because it is so poorly argued and constructed. further, given my observations that many people who do use the talk tab to politely discuss their points have remained unanswered for decades i am NOT prepared to sit around and let this FalseNews remain in view! Clarification or merge with Cultural identity

edit

This is just a quick observation, having reached these pages from the Cultural sensitivity article. I think that both this article and Cultural identity need to clarify what, if any, are the differences, or else perhaps suggest a merge. According to this article "...the collection of social roles that a person might play, known as either the social identity or the cultural identity...". Article a little disorganised in parts?

edit

Edits such as this:

"Gender identity forms an important part of identity in psychology, as it can dictate to a significant[quantify] degree how one views oneself both as a person and in relation to other people, ideas and nature.[citation needed] Other aspects of identity, such as racial, religious, ethnic, occupational… etc. may also be more or less significant – or significant in some situations but not in others"

The gender identity portion seems like an incomplete thought with no citation. "Other aspects" seems like an afterthought and ends in "etc" which seems rather sloppy. The paragraph in general is not very informative and doesn't scan particularly well. I hope this is not a rude suggestion but perhaps it could be re-written in a more academic manner or removed for the time being? SnarkAttackAhh (talk) 21:45, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Difficulty for those who don't identify

edit

As someone who doesn't identify, the concept seems foreign. It is difficult to have to tolerate those who assume everyone identifies as something as I live my life. I am surprised there is no mention on the fact that not everyone identifies within the article. ZhuLien (talk) 03:34, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
