"Ukrainian or Ashkenazi"

edit

This phrase used, "Ukrainian or Ashkenazi", doesn't make sense. Is that really an "or"? How can that be?

Some possible interpretations I could imagine based on that:

  • Ukrainian name (Slavic?), meaning non-Jews in Ukraine have this name.
  • Ashkenazi name (Germanic?), meaning Ashkenazi Jews with no ancestry in Ukraine have this name.
  • More like an "and" than an "or": Particular to Ashkenazi Jews with ancestry in Ukraine.

The citations would seem to suggest that it's the 3rd option. The lack of precision in this article bothers me, though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.0.92.193 (talk) 00:29, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
