Last Name Conflicts

I am confident that Last name (Surname) of Sunil Chetri is "Chettri" (double 't') Not Chetri! He is Indian Nepali, and the last name of Nepali Chettri is pronounced "Chettri". So basically name is confusing, and name needs to be changed! - regards. --Sikkimonline (talk) 14:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, the last name should be Chhetri. With two 'h's not 't'. That's why I have moved the page to this one. If you have any doubts, try googling with all the three variations in surnames. Thanks. Shovon (talk) 16:19, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, yest people do write "Chhetri" and usually "Chettri", but not "Chetri". Thanks for noticing.--Sikkimonline (talk) 08:07, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Birthplace

Various sources state different birthplaces. His Goal.com site says he was born in Hyderabad. Some suggest he was born in Delhi but I've chosen New Delhi as that's on his IndianFootball.com profile. Spiderone (talk) 08:10, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh sorry, I changed it to Delhi from the source given. Consider changing it back with a source stating New Delhi (then one would also have to change Category:People from Delhi to Category:People from New Delhi and the categorization of the WP India template) Hekerui (talk) 11:26, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
I'll leave it for now. I don't think I'll ever be 100% sure where he was born Spiderone 11:52, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Moving to Kansas City Wizards

I wanted to bring to light his move to Kansas City Wizards. I cannot find sources on the kansas city side of things. Most of the news is coming from the indian media. But it does seem clear that he has received a release from Dempo F.C.[1].

viyyer (talk) 15:51, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

It is now confirmed that he has joined the [Kansas City Wizards|Wizards]. [2]

Indian or Nepali

Given this article's quality and potential for losing its GA rating, there have been numerous additions by different editors about his Nepali or Indian heritage with WP:citation overkills that too in the lead; no one should think that more the number of citations, the more 'true' their statements become. Can everyone interested please take this here, and solve this issue once and for all; then we can add a comment to prevent future additions remove the excessive inlines in the lead (which shouldn't have any in the first place since it merely reflects what the article body says). -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:41, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

For me, the fact that he is of Nepali origin should not be in the lead at all. It is the lead for gods sake! It can be added to a personal section within the article (which it already is) but that is it. If he was born in Nepal and then played for India then I would have been fine with "a Nepali-born Indian footballer" but in this case he was born in India and plays for India. That should be the end of it. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 16:36, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
I agree, currently it's even sourced to a site called Goalnepal.com. What's more important is that he has to self-identify and it should be covered by some RS, only then, according to me, it deserves such an explicit mention. I've reverted an addition to the lead again and this time added a comment there as per what you've said. Hopefully, this will reduce the instances of drive-by additions and get them to post their objections here. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 12:23, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Birth place

Despite the fact that there have been a string of recent edits that claim that Chhetri was born in Nepal (and for some reason there is recent belief that he was born in Jhapa) there is no source what so ever to prove this. Every single source I've seen says that he was born in India. Inexplicably an edit that says he was born in Jhapa was allowed to stay on this article for almost a month! C'mon people some common sense here, next time his birthplace comes under debate let us please discuss the manner in an orderly fashion here first. Inter&anthro (talk) 02:03, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

I feel for you, brother. But this vandalism always continues on this page. Another reversal that keeps happening is people keep adding Telangana instead of Andhra Pradesh for Secunderabad and these edits are almost always from IP addresses. Coderzombie (talk) 04:37, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Introduction

Sunil Chhetri recently appeared for the 100th time for India in a match against Kenya in the Intercontinental cup [1] while Baichung Bhutia has 104 caps to his name [2] Please verify your sources and those provided by others prior to you before editing out changes Meet.nick (talk) 13:02, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

@Meet.nick: Chhetri has appeared in 100 games for India, but one of the game in 2011 (against Qatar) was unofficial. So he has appeared only in 99 games. Similarly, Bhutia's 104 games also include under-age games. So for purposes of stats, only official games are counted. Coderzombie (talk) 13:04, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
@Coderzombie: I cannot open the links that you have posted since my up-to-date Firefox browser says that they are insecure. Anything else that you can find to back it up? Meet.nick (talk) 14:39, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
@Coderzombie: To add to what I mentioned earlier the 'Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation' which maintains statistics for International players around the world mentions that Bhaichung Bhutia has 104 International caps for his National team. Here is the list of all the matches he played - http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/bhutia-intlg.html Though there are some in the list not recognized by FIFA as full-A Internationals, they are recognized by the All India Football Federation. Hence, every webpage with player profiles mention 104 International caps for Bhaichung Bhutia and 100 for Sunil Chhetri so far. By deducting the number of Internationals not recognized by FIFA as full-A, you are causing confusion for people who read 100 caps (celebrated by Sunil Chhetri with much fanfare recently) as against 99 caps in this article. The same holds for the number of appearances which is second to Bhaichung Bhutia. Meet.nick (talk) 15:35, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
What's your contention here? Coderzombie (talk) 16:28, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
As I have mentioned earlier, please do not cause confusion among people as the Wikipedia article is the only one that says Sunil Chhetri has 99 caps. Also change the total number of caps as second to Bhaichung Bhutia's 104 going by the same logic. Also, reference number 4 on the page - claiming to be a reference for the 99 caps is an old article having no content whatsoever to justify the number of caps. Meet.nick (talk) 14:08, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
The fact is that official statistics should be considered based on what FIFA, the governing body, considers and 99 is the official number for that, so that's that. Coderzombie (talk) 14:16, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, so be it! But at least back your stand with a reference. The reference quoted in the article is junk Meet.nick (talk) 14:40, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Misleading edits and Vandalsim

The user User:M416p is doing persistant disruptive and misleading edits. I am afraid the user is on the verge of getting blocked. His recent edits where he refereed the player as Nepali-India, and after being addressed that the statement is misleading, as by his logic every human being comes from Africa, for which one can't be called as African Nepali, or African Indian or Aftican Chinese. The personality is a football player who represent a "COUNTRY" not a race or caste or creed. Its above all these, country first. Secondly sportsperson biography is not a ancestry page its about the person's career mainly and the sport he plays and deeds and services, not a janampatri. I have addressed to the user about the Disruptive editing but he seems to continue his actions. Addressing the issue here because if he continue any further with such irresponsible editing will be blocked as already two warnings given to the user. Thank you Dey subrata (talk) 14:28, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

@Dey subrata: Don’t talk nonsense about JanamPatri...who comes from Africa ? You?? Nepal is his origin and I am adding that .... that’s it ... Watch this https://youtube.com/watch?v=CSW0-_asu6k&feature=youtu.be if you still doubt ...

I have reverted you addition. Unless the ethnicity is relevant to the subject's notability, we do not include any descent or links to other nationalities in the lead section of an article. If you wish to add it, supported by reliable sources, then it should be explained in better detail in a relevant personal/early life section. Also, transfermarkt is not considered a reliable source for future reference. Thanks. Kosack (talk) 18:28, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

2018-19 Season Club Career Summary

I waited last month to add Chhetri's 2018-19 season as I'm very new to Wiki platform but have been writing about football for 6 years now. I'm mentioning the addition here as well. Chhetri's page looks so out-dated and that's a shame for India's greatest player ever. Can anyone help me in getting editing permission? The edit (without cite and links):

"

2018-19 Season

Sunil opened his account for the season by scoring in a draw against Jamshedpur FC at home. Generally used as a left-winger, he started as a center forward for a few matches scoring 10 goals and 3 assists in 20 games in all competitions. Bengaluru FC maintained its top position to qualify for the playoffs.

Chhetri started ISL Playoffs semifinals where he assisted in the team’s only goal in 2-1 first-leg defeat, playing away against NorthEast FC. During the second leg at home, BFC overturned the deficit with Chhetri scoring in 3-0 win and securing spot in Finals. Chhetri played full 120 minutes and captained his side to their first victory in ISL with Rahul Bheke scoring an extra-time winner against FC Goa side.
