Wording

Maybe "The district is also gradually becoming a more popular tourist destination" should be changed into "The district is also gradually becoming a popular tourist destination". I think the "more" is unecessary with the "gradually" in the sentence. --Fir0002 www 08:55, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

And maybe "The Swifts Creek Demons Australian Rules Football team" should be changed into "The Swifts Creek "Darby's Demons" Australian Rules Football team". The notice board outside general store quotes them as Darby's Demons.--Fir0002 www 09:01, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • That may be the case, but personally I don't like adding advertising to things like team names. Historically they've been the Demons. And look, just because you get a sponsor you don't change your name, e.g., it's not the Mazda Kangaroos, or the Collingwood United Arab Emirates Magpies. I would leave that as is. --jjron 09:19, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK fair enough --Fir0002 www 09:59, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

Here's my comment for you. Can you get some of those great pics you've got of the district, even some of the panoramas, and add them where appropriate? --jjron 09:20, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've got a number stored up, but I don't want to make the page too image heavy. I've uploaded one and put it on the top. Maybe I'll get rid of the sign photo? --Fir0002 www 09:55, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Yeah, I'm not enamoured with the sign pic anyway, replace it if you've got something better. No, don't overload the page with pics, but say one per section is OK. I want to add a bit more to the history when I get the info, so that will space a pic in there a bit better. And if you've got a better sport pic, change that too, that one is just some old one I took years ago on one of the old school cameras, I think the old Canon, but it may have even been the old Kodak - whatever, it's pretty ordinary quality, though I guess becoming historic. Changed your caption on that main pic, hope u don't mind. Great pic, but looks a bit saturated, how much work have you done on it, can't remember the grass ever being that green around here! --jjron 10:09, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I've chocked the page up with pix now, edit them out to get the best ones. I put two images on the sport section, but I think an action shot like the one you have is a good idea. Yeah the grass was pretty green at one stage, and that was pretty much the only point (I went up the hill specially). Exposure bracket and polarizes help as well. I honestly don't think I did any extra saturation. Level probably brought up the colors a bit tho. --Fir0002 www 10:30, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Do you think my 'banner' use of the top pic is overkill? Also I reckon the two down the bottom would maybe look better side by side, than one under the other. Can you do that? --jjron 10:55, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Don't think that was the best idea - see how it looks on my screen --Fir0002 www 11:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
See what you think of the current arrangement --Fir0002 www 11:31, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Yeah, bad. But yours is bad on my screen. May need to go back to the centering, or maybe just use one (I'd probably say the pool, which is a shame because that's a nice shot of the oval; shame you can't get that shot while a game's going on and we could dump mine). Or perhaps use your oval where my pic is, shift mine under it to match the sports teams para, and then centre the pool underneath? --jjron 11:58, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • BTW, was just thinking, did anything ever come of that 360 degree panorama you were trying to do at the main intersection (think it was you)? Just thinking the page is starting to look very 'green', it would be good to have a pic of the township at ground level with less surrounding hills. --jjron 11:03, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I haven't tried to do a complete 360 yet, but here's some smaller panos see what you think. Image:Pano swifts creek township.jpg, Image:Pano swifts creek township02.jpg, Image:Pano swifts creek township03.jpg. Don't know about the top banner - it makes the image fit well but I don't think it's an excepted practice to start an article with an image like that. Could be wrong of course, but I haven't seen it like that in an article before. --Fir0002 www 11:27, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Maybe it will start a new trend, I was going to do the same on my Southwest Wilderness page (wonder what would happen on small screens). It was just the way you had it really cramped the first para up bad on my screen, like a couple of words a line, so we'd have to make it considerly smaller, like under 500px. The second pano is confusing, and I live here! The first and third are both good, though they both look pretty heavy with ugly road, and maybe it's too many panos for one article. I wonder if a straight shot of Darby's or something would be just as good? --jjron 11:58, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've added a pano under the industry section - I think it makes a good seperator. I agree the second pano is pretty wierd, which is partly why I took it! I've added some stuff to the mill info - basically just an excerpt from the SOSE project from last year. It may need some polishing/rewording. I've also added some more pix to sport section. It'd be good to maybe make a seperate section on the TV Races as I've got heaps of good photos. Maybe even something on the Apline Discovery Festival? Anyway see what you think of the new pix. Oh and I added a shot of the High School. --Fir0002 www 00:53, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Referencing

edit

I've added info to the history section based off the sign outside the Bookshop. I persume it's been put up by the shire, but I'm not to sure on the referencing. Any ideas? --Fir0002 www 09:59, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, the signs were put up by the shire, I also don't know how you reference a sign, it's not even some type of Pers. Comm. (personal communication). I was going to get some info on Howitt off the cairn up at the corner past Gallaghers, again, how do u refernce it? But look, it was actually Graeme Deveson that made those signs for the shire, so surely he can provide us with refs for the info. --jjron 10:19, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Really? How did he do that? Do you mean he just designed them or he actually constructed them? If he did the designing or whatever than it should be pretty easy to get some refs. --Fir0002 www 10:32, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm sure he said he made them in Illustrator. Now I can't recall the exact details, but I think they paid him for the job and he had to make them and pay to get them 'printed' onto the signs, something like $800 each (that could be a bit mixed up). Then of course it was the shire that actually came and put them up. But, regardless, I'm sure it was his info. --jjron 10:43, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
So do you think it's reliable? Coz the explanation for the name you had sounds pretty good, I only added the other stuff cause of the sign. Illustrator! --Fir0002 www 10:47, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree, the miner story sounds cleaner, I can't even make full sense of that other version (i.e., it was the road junction at Swifts Creek, that still doesn't explain why Swifts Creek, why not Bobs Creek, or Fast Creek, or No Water Creek? Perhaps Gardy's story explains the origin of the creek name, and Greame's story explains the origin of the town name? --jjron 10:54, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm gonna reword the history section based on this assumption; see how you think it reads. --jjron 11:05, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I like the history section rewording, much better --Fir0002 www 11:31, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nice to have an article about the place at last

Hi - I enjoyed reading about the home town of at least two wikipedians :-)A Y Arktos\talk 09:29, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Agreed. Good things can happen with collaboration. The page seems a LITTLE image-heavy, though! I'm not convinced that a photo of the diving boards is necessary.. The text is probably enough. Same with the lawnmower races. Significant for the locals perhaps, but I'm not sure about for a random wikipedian. It would probably be appropriate to reduce the number of images by 1/3 or so, but I'll leave it to you guys to figure it out. :) Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 10:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
