RFC1464 not that important
editThis page puts far too much emphasis on the semantics applied to the value as suggested by RC1464. As far as DNS is concerned the value is unstructured and opaque (it just doesn't care), you can put any old data there (255 chars or less). One example that far predates RFC1664 is Hesiod, for example, storing "/etc/passwd" "lines" like:
